VISION OF EAST AND

Smhttrlin Is qutte excited . over

have been seen working In tbo

and their presence has resulted in
much surmise. Tho Suthorliu Suu

Much speculation has been
aroused here the past week In re
gard to an engineering crew which
has been working for some lime
through the mouutuiti range east
of Sulherllu. Itumor bus it that
the engineers left Bond severul
weeks ago, since which time they
have been gradually working thru
the mouutuin region and big tim
ber toward Sutheiiln.
There were ' soveu euglucors In
the party and they carried three
tripods and olbor surveying equip
ment, and when they emerged from
the woods and bushes at the head
of Sulherllu valley ten days ago
with unshaven fuces ' and torn
olothos. they had the appotiranco
of having been long isolated trom
the haunts of man,
At the upper end of tho valley
they telephoned to Hoseburg lor
an automobile, which arrived here
later and picked them -up. On the
road three. miles east ol Sulherllu
the cur wua obliged- to slop on ac
count of lire trouble, and while iho
tire wua being- removed u citizen of
Sutheiiln ciuiie along m his cur
and ottered usslstuuce. This was
gladly nccepled in the lorm ot
"stickum" for u patch on an inner
tube. . . '
While repairs wore being made
one of the engineers recognized
tho Sutherllu citizen ns nil oltl
friend whom he had known years
ago in Walla Walla, Wash., und
they discussed old times. . Wheu
the Sulherllu man made inquiry
however, as to what the engineers
were doing m inis section, no in
formation was forthcoming. "We
are absolutely bound to secrecy us
from whence we came or whither
w6 are going, -. replied the - engi
neer. 'it would please me to give
an old friend information it 1 was
in a position to do so, but wo are
