THIS HAS HAPPENED
Attempts have been made on the
litis of Eltse Marberry, an .Ameri
can girl owning considerable pro
perty near the little town of Porto
Verde, In west central Brntil. She
has escaped harm due to the
shrewdness of her cousin and pro
tector, Vilak, who with hlB .friend,
Lincoln Nunnally, au elderly
American chemist, is trying to
(earn the -reason lor the strange en
mity for Elise.
Living near Porto Verde Is one
Gaylord Prentiss, a strange and
forbidding 'character, who hai
evinced a hatred for Elise.
Tlhky, Ellse's two-year-old or
phaned nephew, is kidnaped. A'na
tive reports Prentiss has been
seen' with the baby. The. trail
lead's Into tho jungle.
Calamity overtakes the expedi
tion Vilak organizes in pursuit.
Native trackers are injured or d'
pert. Treachery breaks out. Their
white friends are fever victims
and are left with a friendly tribe.
Kllse, Vilak and Nunnally final
ly emerge from the jungle. Pres
ently they come to the outskirts of
a strange city, resembling old Inca
civilization. Here they are made
prisoners. They discover they are
in the power ot Carlos D'Alben-,
tara whom they had known as uu
engineer back In Porto Verde. i
The black ruler of the city de
cides to marry Elise and to put
yilak and Nunnu'.'y to death. They
are torbe tortured at the feast of
Rnymi, as are. .EUse's nephew and
