ROSEBURG NEWS-REVIEW, SATURDAY. JULY 23, 1927. , FIVE 0ZT 0 NEASerw V7 THIS HAS HAPPENED Attempts have been made on tlio life of Kllus Murborry, Uio on property adjoining the queer little jungle-bordered town of Por to Verde, la weat central Brazil, i Several mysterious deaths have occurred, but so tar Bhe hau es caned barm, due to the shrewdness) ot her couslu and protector, Vlluk, who masquerades us her uttoruey under the uume of Davis. Vlluk Is a curious mixture of Amerlcun aiul ! Urleutal blood uud a student of ti luimuiugj. jib uifo iu utuauuuu Kline to leave the country, leav , ing blm there with btB friend, Lin f colu- Nunnally, uu elderly Ameri-j can chemist, to solve the mystery., Kllso at first refuses, but after'1 her two-year-old orphaned nephew, is kidnapped, to be touud uguiu by the alert Vlluk, aud another at tompt is made on their lives, Bhe ugruea and prepares to take the next boat. Her departure Is prevented by : the threat of floods. Messengers ride through the countrysldo warn ing the natives that the dam at Avllos has burst. Thou Vlluk de cides to proceed to the bouse of Uaylord Prentiss and warn him, of the danger. Prentiss Is a recluse and a forbidding man, as well as an enemy of Kiise's, and she su spects him of some knowledge of the conspiracy against ber. Never theless, she agrees that It is their duty to warn him. They learn that the flood warn ing Is just a ruse to get Prentiss .out of his house. Vilak persuades Prentiss to admit them and they barricade themselves In a small stone tower. Unknowa attackers begin firing from the barricaded i. gale. Nunnally is wounded. NOW BEGIN THE STORY " V ' CHAPTER XXIX Vilak turned his blackened lace from hiB rifle .an Instant, shot a glance at the chemist, squeezed bis shoulder affectionately. .."Hard luck, Nanny,'! he suld . cheerily. . "Work for you, EHse." He Tiwung his head back to his riflo and began to redouble the rut of bis already rupld fire. "Cheer up, Nanny. Needed another wounded man to keep me company. You with your arm and I with the wrist I got the other night will go around singing with a grind-organ. alter we get out of this.' -Wake more that way than-you do with chemistry," -. . i , 1 Ellso had hastened forward to examine the ' wound. ' Nunnally tried to prevent her. "No tir No," he stammered. "It isn t ' anything Just a scratch A splint of steel a er splinter. Fix it myself Need you at the window." Elise"lia: not . heed him,'-. She looked at the floor, now in places covered with an inch or twoof"-wa-Y ter from the spring trickling in the corner. She found a clear pool and in one instant had brought wat ter, from It and washed the wound, iu thje next had torn a strip of cloth from her dress and tied It iu a tight bandage, checking the How of blood. The gray silk appeared like a great butterfly which had settled on his wispy arm. , A bell begun to ring: in some far off part of the house. The dog bayed loudly. Prentiss cadaverous body writhed, bis angular face contorted .wilh. fear, his eyes were the eyes of a trapped beast. "They've gotten In " he panted. "Gotten In" Vilak shook his head. "No. Sure they haven't. I can seo too piain- lv A hullo miiol l.ntro nt the electric wires around the lock."' A man's silhouette appeared oil the barbed wire which overtopped the wall. "Good idea that extra wire. Wakes them perfect targets. Don't think they'll try that again even if thoy do know now, that It i isn't carrying high voltage. 'V me oesiegers nring necame desultory. Vilak took advantage of the interval of inaction to stretch flilH cramped muscles and light a clgaret. The match sputtered into the water at bis foot. He gazed, at it philosophically, "Hope none' of you the susceptible to pneumonia, with all this water on the floor. Seems to mo I've been living in the liquid for the past month." He splashed over to the box of cartridges, - which for security iigalnnt a stray bullet hud been put behind a -heavy wooden chest, Ho fingered the bullets thoughtfully. "No use losing our heads, but the cold fact has to be admitted that we're in a pretty situation. Our ammunii ion's running very low, our enemy is superior In numbers, at least four times oursnlves, I should say, judging by the rifle ballots. At the most, even with no1 change of tactics on their part and! with everything In. our favor, we can nolo tnem oil only two hours or. so while it will he morning be fore anyone learns that the report of the flood is false and returns to Porto Verde. So we can expect no help there. A beautiful job this. Perfectly planned. Perfectly plan ned. I extend our friends outside my compliments." He flicked the ash from his cl garet. "If any of you have any Ideas, they'll bo welcome." Elise and the old man looked at him nnd shook their heads. Pren Ush did not turn front his window, hut kept his eye fixed now on (he gate, now on the house. Vilak stretched again' then returned to. bis post. A sound of chopping rose tip from the creek, followed soon after by the rumble of a falling tree. . Eltse glanced at Vilak question Ingly. "A battering ram, prob ably," he KRftl. "About time they thought of it. They'll try to break ( down the gate. And at tlm Inns of a few men they'll undoubtedly do It, for moat of them can keep in the shelter of the wall." A few moment later they hear! the dull, muffled booming of wood against Iron as a log struck th gate. They fired. The muffled thunder continued. In short, regu lar Intervals like the reports of some dlstaut artillery regiment la Ben Lucien Burmon practicing on the range. The pile of cartridges grew smaller. Tho old man, despite his wound ed arm, hud resumed llriug. His rifle jammed. Vlluk cleared It. i "Gate can't last much longer," bo muttered. I 't he spring in the corner gurgled : softly, the water rcuo an instant,! then trickled uosily over the stone: door-sll). A brilliant green cater-1 pillar, Irritated by the acrid smoke of the guns, crawled out of a crack ! in the rocks ami begun climbing j the wull. Some frightened, unseen l nighthird dashed against-the win dow; a jaguar howled fur off in the jungle. Vlluk took betel. He became ab sorbed in contemplation, bis fin ger mechanically pressing tho trig ger of his rifle; his eyea became the dull, dreaming eyos of a philo sopher In some Tibetan lamasury; the thin film like a bird's Inner eyelid, crept slowly over the white eyeballs again. : Suddenly ho put down his rifle. "A perfect idiot," he flushed, as he hurried to tho other side of the tower uud began surveying the low plateau back of Prentiss' house. "Completely losing my im agination. For the second time in a week I've ignored ameans of es cape .when It was crying to be used. Any powder or dynamite here, Prentiss?" ' . Tho other whipped away from the wlndow. The mark ou his fore head was quivering. "Dynamite? Not much A little," he whlsper od feverishly. "Left over blast ing for wall." Hls face was flam ing. "Got a plan? Got a plan?" Vilak nodded quickly. "Where Is It?" "Let's get It." The crept out the door, keeping to the shadows. Thoy were not perceived by the attackers; in a moment they had ro turned to the tower room with two packages wrapped - in dirty newspapers. These Vilak untied and, exposing a number of sticks of dynamite, ex amined, them closely. ; "Still good all right. Not- touched by damp ness." He shot a glance toward the old man and the girl. "Eire as fast as you can. Delay them. Time's the important thing" now." The log boomed monotonously against the gutu. " Ho; . took the piece of twine in. which one pack ago had been wrapped and began rubbing it with 'the1 explosive- to make a fuse. ' "What's your plan? What's your plan?' Prentiss panted. - "Not , mine. ' Nature's. Should have thought of it at once, with that spring gurgling there - .and soaking our shoes all the time. The water up in those little lakes1 on the high ground all around you is doing its best to break through aud come down. on hs.' We'll just give It a little assistance." ' ' Hefsearched 'among tho iiiuwb; l papers for-a detonator. . "ijior tip part of that retaining waif -4 .nof itlcecl damning mat rtrst rainy large lake back of. your- house.. Do j it iwifh a; pick if 'we have' to, but I the dynamite's quicker. Our friends outside said there was a ' flood. We'll give them one. Nothing ori ginal. 'The Dutch did it nil the time when the country was 'Invad ed, Cut the dikes, if you i remem ber." Ho tied the clicks in series of throes. "Not so safe hero. Taking chances. Long chances. '. A lot of wator up there. Don't know exact ly how much. And we'ro only ten feot or so higher that the creek bed. Perfectly apt to get us as well as the others. But it's ttic only chance we'vo got." The booming of the log ceased probably to allow the attackers to rest. Prentiss 'stared at Vilak, half fearful, half incredulous. "Go ing to let tho lakes down on us?" "Yes' "Wash us away everything away." "If you have a less : dangerous plan, we'll be delighted to take It." Prentiss shook his head sullenly. Vilak swiftly rebundled the ex plosive In. a newspaper and start ed toward tho door. He turned to Prentiss. "Any way I can get through tho wall? Don't want to climb over unless I have to. Al most sure tq be seen." . "There's a place. Old drainage sewer. Barred up now. Hut can get through if you know how. GIRLHOOD TO E Iowa Woman Found Lydia E.
