The city council held u lengthy
and busy session last night, at
tending to a largo number of im
portant matters.
The street repair work was giv
en u good deal of attention and
painted ulong the curbs to warn
tourist a of the limit fixed by the
council. , '
I Another petition filed by the
property owners: along the two
blocks of Stephens street between
Cass and Moaner was referred to
the committee on electric lights.
This petition asked that street
lamps, similar to those on Casa and
Jackson streets be Installed. It
was suggested that the matter he
placed on the ballot at the special
bond election to be held July 8. It
is too late, however, to put the
matter on the ballot, so the elec
tric light committee will endeavor
to work out some other plan, if
possible.
The contract for lumlshing sup
plies and keeping the city street
lights in Operation was let to A.
H. Crowell. Bids were submitted
by two firms, but Mr. Crowell's
offer was found to be the best for
the city's interest and waa accept
ed. In view of the fact that the city
attorney will be required to dovote
an unusually large amount of time
to alterations of the city charter
and foreclosure of lelns, he was
granted a salary increase of $75
I per month for a period of one
year. The bulk or the money will
he received back by the city, it is
believed, through the collection of
attorney fees in the lien foreclos
ure actions.

that Stephens street, between Cass
and Lane, be included iu the re
stricted parking district. As this

technical experts of Great Britain,
the United States and Japan.
The experts were instructed,
first, to exchange views and reach
an agreement on the existing sta
tus of the three navies, including
building programs, and second, to

posals placed before Iho confer
ence yesterday, with a view of
clarification, of their real purport.

Mad Bull, heading tho contest

miles of the course at 10 o'clock
last night, after having had almost
five hours of. rest. Flying Cloud
arrived threo quarters of an hour
beforo Mad Hull left. The hold
er of second placo got less than
threo hours rest leaving hero
shortly before midnight when D

Mellka's backers, awaiting his
arrival here early today, prepared,
to push him on in a last desper
ate effort to overtake the other
two.
The other six runners were
struus: over a distance ot nearly
100 miles.

stamina. Mad Bull was expected to
