There was

a folded five-dollar bank note.
After two months tho weekly en
closure became seven dollars, in
stead of five; within three months
there was a teiwlollar bill In each
weekly envelope. The ' letters
themselves contained tmly gener

Mrs. Wells wept over the letters

months went by without bringing
a ray of hope to the tnstracicu
young man, who was rapidly be
coming a riguro of importance in
New York's musical circles.
Nydu I.omax Banning, whom
rli.v encountered on Ihe street one
day nearly a year alter Hilly's dis,
iiii'nenranco. gave Clay the firsti
real new reason to hope.
Clay hardly recognized tho over-

Clay sat nlone, waiting to hear a

held him in conversation.
"Sure, I ditched Eddie long ago.
I was in the chorus of 'Naughty,
Naughty!' for- (wo .months, then
a blg.biilter-and-egg man convinc
ed me that .work was bud for my
health. So I'm taking things easy."
she ndded nonchalantly., ' Aim say,
by tho way, 1 thought Hilly Wells
was the 'blue-eyed baby, so far as
old T. Qj wns concerned. What's
she doing in New York, wearing
lust yenr's -clolhes i and looking
like a starving Armenian?" .
Clay lenned forward .so-abruptly
that lie overturned his own un

boo her?" ho demanded, his voice
trembling with eagerness.
"Walking along Broadway one
night -with a fiddle, case in her
hands," Nyda answorcd. "V a r

That's all 1 know! I was with my
boy friend and I didn t speak to
her."
No matter how desperately he
pounded his question, at her, Clay
could get no more out of Nyda.
Hut he did leave the night club
that night Willi hope burning high
In his heart. It Nyda had' seen
Hilly ou Broadway, when she
wasn't even looking for her
couldn't he who loved her so well

"Mossed, plucky little fcugel!"
he exulted. "I knew she was
studying again. Working all day
and studying nt night. Shed been.

When his symphony, "Tho Song

walking, heedless .of his surround

above the roar ot passing elevated
trains he heard the high sweet, per
fectly pitched tones or a violin.
He slopped as suddenly as It he
had been shot. No, he was not
