WEU- KEPT NAILS
if vou will keep a small and not
too stiff, bristled uall brush In your
bathroom, It will help solve the
problem of keeping your nails nice
looking without: spending much
time over them. Nails look badly
because minute particles of dirt
collect around the cuticle and un
der the edges, and one of the
quickest ways to get these particles
off is by hot water, soap and a
brush. For the brush gets undei
the edges and cleans more thor
oughly than rubbing with the hands
or with a olotb.
Don't use too stiff a brush,
though; or you may bruise the deli
oate skin around the nails, or the
still more delicate part beneath the
nails, where they grow from the
lingers and where most of the dirt
collects. And don't scrub too bard;
a lot of damage Is done In this
world by the people who are over
conscientious. Use a moderately
stiff brush, and It yoms happens
to be. too stiff, let the hot water
soften It before you try H. -
The nails need bleaching every
few days, because stains get On
the skin or underneath the halls
and even the brush won't take
them oft. I'd advise keeping a lit
tle bottle ot lemon juice In the
bathroom Cupboard and using this
with an orange wood stick wrap
ped in cotton, Just as you use any

SOME COLD WEATHER SUGGESTIONS
Chapped Lips
Don't have chapped lips I
.There is nothing more distress
ing to Bee, . or. uncomfortable tu
feel, than chapped Hps, especially
when they go on to tho stage of
swelling, cracking and bleeding.
TheBe conditions are very easily
prevented by the application ot a
cold cream lipstick. These Unsticks
are inexpensive you can get one
lor 19 to 25 cents and they aro
usually made ot a specially pre
pared cold cream with a little gly
cerine. When applied, a thin color
less coating is left, which will act
a protection against the cold
air. Those who are troubled with
sensitive Hps should never be with
out one of these lipsticks, The or
dinary com cream will not servo
because it Is too thin, rubs off too
eaBlly and Is Impractical to carry.
Men who are susceptible to chap
ped Hps should not. scorn to have
a .lipstick of this nature with them
constantly; a good coating should
De applied Detoro going out of
doors and If out for any length of
time, another coating should be
applied.
Chronically cracked Hps should
not be considered lightly because
in the later years, when the so-
called cancer age begins, a crack
or sore on the lip. if allowed to
go on indefinitely, may be the ba
sis lor a cancerous growth.
Chapped Hands
There Is nothing bottsr for chap
ped bands than glycerine, but It
must be greatly diluted to be heal
ing. The reason Bomo find that
glycerine does not agreo with their
skin Is that they do not dilute it
sufficiently. Three-quarters water
and sometimes a greater dilution

A practical way to use clvcerlne
Is to buy it undiluted, pour a fow

you rub It on the lunula. Those
who nave their hands In water a Si
good deal should havo a bottle of
glycerine or some other lotion
handy and use it every time the
bands are washed.
This glycerins solution, with a
drop or two of carbolic acid to the
I ounce, is a good healing solution
for those who aro troubled with
Bcaly and itchy skin.
If you find glycerine, even great
ly diluted does not agrco, then per
haps liberal applications of cold
cream or petrolatum or mutton tal
low will work. If the hands aro se
verely chapped, better wear some
loose gloves with tho glycerine or
cream on the hands, at night.
Chilblain
Chilblain Is the result ot severe
cold on portions of the skin. It Is
usually found that persons who
suffer from chilblain are anemic
und have sluggish clrculatlon.Tnere
is this reaction in the tissues be
cause tho cold unduly contracts the
poorly supplied blood vessels and
tho skin does not gut its nourish
ment Treatment: As In other skin dis
orders . which aro local manifesta
tions of general undor-pnr-ness of
tho system, obviously the thing to
do Is to tako measures to get to par
in health. Those who are predis
posed to chilblain and frost bite
should wear woolen coverings 03
the hands, fcot, and ears, If neces
sary. Absolute cleanliness with
thorough drying after washing,
especially of tho feet, Is very Im
portant. Sometimes stimulating
ointments, containing camphor, lo
dlrj, Ichthyol or embolic acid, aro
helpful.
