i , BOOK BY BOOK' i it j'
ROMANS THE WAY'OF SALVATION IN 'SlX QREAT WORDS
. The Kpistlo io the tonians,-whUh CoIorldi!e culls "the pro-,
roundest book In existence,'' was written by the Aposlla Paul from.
Corinth about the year 50 A. IX after he' had, been a Christian
aboit twcnly years.
''Undoubtedly it is Paul's masterpiece ;and; one of the chief
hooks of tlie New Testament. :- . 1 ': . i '
The "key-note" is sounded-iu l:1617:l'!For I. am not ashairjed
of the gospel of Christ: for It Is the power of God unto salvation
to everyone that belleveth: to the Jew rirst, and also to the Oreek.
For therein Is the righteousness of ,()od- revealed from faith to
faith', as-It Is written. The just shall live by fulth'." r--i y
Frpm this fuhduinonttil statement Paul evolves the profound
argument of tho epistle which may be summarized In six grout
words, Viz.; "Condemnation, justification, sanctificatlon, glorifica
tion, restoration and 'consecration. "j , . - j t
''Condemnation!' is what all men deserved because of their un
righteousness. The wrath of God wag Incurred by all through un
godliness. ' "That every mouth may be stopped, lind all the word
become guilty before God." - This is the argument up to 3:20.
"Justification" Is the way by 'which condemnation is removed,
and tlie righteousness of God imputed to tlie unrighteous through
faith-alone in Jesus (Christ without the- deeds p the law. "As by.i
the qffance of one Judgment came upon (ill men to condemnation; ,
even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all'
men unto justification." This is the argument from 3:21 to 5:21.
"Sanctificatlon" and not license will be the reBUlt of this
abounding grace of justification. "Khali we continue In sin, that
grace muy abound? God forbid." Hather, the justified believer
"walks not after the flesh, but after the Spirit' and "through the ,
Spirit," tjnd "through the Spirit mortifies the deeds of the body,''.
This process of sanctificatlon is dealt with in 6:1 to 8:13.
"Glorification'' is the goul of justification and sunptiflcstion.
Our glory Is that we are the "children of God: and if children, '
then heirs; heirs of God, and Joint-heirs with Christ." "Whom he
justified, them he also glorified." Thus the argument proceeds in
8:1-1-39.
'Restoration" is the word that sums up the argument Paul
makes in chapters 9 to 11 for the solution of the "Jewish Ques:
lion." Ood'hnth not cast away his ancient people Israel. "Because
of unbelief they were broken off," but ''they also, If they abide not
still in unbelief .shall bo. grafted in: for God is able to graft in
again.'' ; ., , i . - ' ' '- .
'"Conseeratlpn" -Is the great practical word which sums up the
' laBt five chuptms and to which all the doctrinal words of the first :
: eleven chapters lead up. It shows the manner in which Paul
would make doctrine the motive power of practico:"! beseech you
thorefore, brethren,- by the mercies of God, that ye present your
bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.'! .
Thus it .Is with nil ot Paul's great epistles: first conies "doc-,
trine," and afterwards "practice,'? und between these, like a golden .
hinge, a "therefore," showing that doctrine is the root, and prnc;
tlce the fruit of Chrlsliunlty.
, Let no man despise doctrine, for It is the foundation; of life,1
nnd let not. those who confess the Christian doctiiiw full to trans
jute it 'Into, consecrated Christian living. ' -
