DENTON. III.. Dec. 13. A theory
was advanced today that hired
gunmen killed Joe Adams, mayor
ot West City,' near here, who was
shot down by two unidentified men
as he stood in the riont doorway
of his home late yesterday. It was
another episode in the gang war
fare that has disrupted the peace
of Williamson, Franklin and Saline
counties during the full and win
ter and was the cuimlnution of
two previous aitucks on the mayor.
Adams was called to his door
way yesterduy after his wife, Beu
lab, answered a Knock and found
two young men Btnnding there.
They told her that they hud a letter
for ner nusband. The mayor came
to the door, extended bis hand to
receive the letter and was an
swered with two shots from . the
gun of each of the men. He turn
ed, stuggered and fell; with three
bullelB in his body and died forty
minutes later. He was able to tell
his family only that he had not
recognized the men.
Two southern! Illinois, mayors
havo met violent deaths : within
the last two months ml the hands
ot gangsters. , . , I
Jeff Stone, civic head of Colo, a
smull town, rell dead from machine
gun fire on the main street on tha
night of November 6, aftei he was
lured with Police Chief - John
Keith to a resort where It was re
ported there was trouble. Stone's
assailants felled him as they sped
by iu three automobiles which hud
