nor and prohibition forces have
named State Senator Franklin W.
Cristnian as an independent Repub
lican candidate for senator.
Sonator Wadsworth, a wet, said
there was a possibility that' Repub
lican control of tho next senate
might depend upon bis own elec
tion, and added: "Naturally the
president is desirous of support
from New York and every state."
The senator said he would wage
his campaign on national issues.
The dry forces are demanding
re-enactment of a state enforcement-
provision and a fight at the
Republican convention . September
27 . over this plank is in prospect.
In this connection Senator Wads
worth said the Republican plat
form probably would contain a
plank for law enforcement.
Smith Likely to Run.
While Governor Smith is now
definitely in the lists for reelection
there is strong Democratic senti
ment for him and he has declared
that he will abide by the decision
of the Democratic convention
which is also on September 27.
Mr. Wadsworth expressed the
opinion that Governor Smith wonid
run again and that his opponent
for senator would he Supreme
Court Justice Robert F. Wagner.
Dr. Ruller. who has been attack
ed by the drys for Ids outspoken
condemnation of the Volstead act,
said he was withdrawing his namo
from discussion because lie consid-
jered his duties as professor of Col-
umbia university too important for
him to quit them for politics.

Vessel Springs Leak.
The Blnking of the steamer was
described by J. B. Gamble, captalo
of the boat. The steamer, he said,
was loaded at Erie peninsula and
was bound for Buffalo. Whllu it
was being poutided by the heavy
sea, it sprang a leak.
Water rushed into ths held of
the boat very rapidly, and It was
only a matter of a few minutes be
fore the ship sank. Tho three life
boats battled tho large waves for
more than au hour until tho Mall
land, bound for Canada, crossed
their course and was attracted by
the distress flares shot from the
boats.
Captain Hey man of the Maltland
put hia car ferry about and picked
up two of the lifeboats. The third
could not be seen. Captain Iley
man, it was announced in a mes
sage from the radio operator of
the Maitlaud, stood by until day
light and then started a search
for the missing boat.

make a scheduled stop at Cleve
land. She received radio calls for
assistance from tho freighter Ger
keu, but could not safely turn and
attempt to aid her. Out of her
450 passengers only 90 were able
to eat dinner Friday ntgbt.
The steamer Corona of the Can
adian Steamship lines, Toronto to
Lewiston, N. Y., was so badly bat
tered Friday by the seas that she
was withdrawn from ,lhe service
to undergo repairs.

REBELS BEATEN IN
NICARAGUAN FIGHT

The revolutionists liavo been
