Many '.'Colds" Caused
by Poor Ventilation
To And better preventive meth
ods, doctors in recent yenrg have
been studying the common cold
more carefully tlmn ever, and two
authorities have summarized the
supposed causes of this utllictlon
under live lieadlugs; chills and
drafts, coudltlons of the weather.
Irritation of the membrane on Ibe
breathing apparatus, infection and
bad ventilation. The lust is re
garded us the commonest of ail the
causes, us warm slagaunt ulr pro
duces congestion In tho mucous
membrane which becomes covered
with a thick secretion und affords
a weak spot fur germs to uttack.
In cool nlr, this membrane remains
tuut nnd well moistened. Then, In
n poorly ventiluted room, cold cur
rents of nlr. are likely to strike the
feet, while the bend Is exposed to
the wunn, polluted upper at
mosphere. Tills Is Just the reverse
of what Is considered the ideal con
dition for health, "cool breezes
blowing nround the head, the radt
mit heut of the sun, and a warm
ground to stand on." Exposure
alone will not cause colds In
healthy individuals, the doctors de
clare. Arctic explorers, fishermen,
ond others who remnin out of doors
for long hours in stormy, cold
weather, often seem Immune from
these disorders. Irritation of the
mucous membrane 'of tho respira
tory passages by dusts and chem
icals 18 also a common cause of
colds. Popular Mechanics Magazine.

The growth nnd security of
Russia's foreign trade depends on
j the rapidity of her economic re
eovery, Mr. McDonald adds, which
' In turn depends largely on the ex
i tent to which long term credits
are made available,
i "llefnro granting these, enpital
, ism still demands further conccs

j The tendency toward doing bus
iness on a capitalist basis "grows
stronger day to day," he con
tinues. I "Despite attempts by state coin

Parts of Old London
That Have Been Moved
It is frequently pointed out thnt
Temple bar is at Theobald's pork,
ond thnt the front of old Mercer's
hall, designed by Sir Christopher
Wren, is now the front of Swnnnge
town hall, but there are bits of
London which have gono much far
ther afield and are not so well
known.
In the cathedral of Ghent, In Bel
glum, are elaborate copper can
dlesticks that once belonged to Old
St. Paul's. It may be asked how
they escaped the great fire. The
fact is they had been sold by Crom
well about sixteen years earlier.
Still farther afield has gone the
old rose window of the south
transept of Westminster nbbey, also
the work f Wren. It was removed
about twenty-live years ago to
mnko "room for a new window In
memory of the late duke of West
minster, nnd was given to the ca
thedral In Cape Town.
In the garden of the White Bear
Inn nenr Addlscombe, .Croydon,
stands the figure of a refal-looking
white bear made of wood. This
used to lie n prominent object where
tiie electric signs now blaze at Pic
cadilly circus. 'Until sixty years
ago the White Bear Coaching inn
stood on the stte now occupied hy
the Criterion restaurant, and tills
huge wooden bear was Its sign.

Let's welcome Summer with a new
outfit fine carjnew tires. bright
household-.ahd plans for a Fourth of
July Tour
Summer is here officially. This the 21st her birthday. Let's
celebrate for she's the gayest and kindest of seasons.
Let's spruce up, doll up, paint iip, clean up let's abandon the old
togs, the old ways and the old conservatism let's step out and buy!
New clothes put new color in life's picture, new pep in the step. A
new rug new porch furniture animates the cheer of the home. New
tires, a new battery and clean cylinders revitalize the good old car.
A new trunk a new suitcase brings vacation days closer.
Let's link arms and step out!
Retail values were never greater or fairer. Never has there been
so much offered for the money in style, in variety and in utility.
That applies on all desirable and usable things all commodities all
articles, whether for adornment of person or home.
As a newspaper with interests of all at heart, we believe it our duty
to point out these things. People far more interested in their own
thoughts, their own pleasures, their own cares frequently overlook
the trend of values. Values are like the tide they advance and re
cede. The time to buy is when the dollar buys most . ..and that time
isNOW!
Buying now means saving money. There is no other practical
viewpoint.
So, like all prudent, thrifty citizens, let's buy NOW!
Three GloriousJDays are Coming!
Holidays! July 3-4-5. Spend them touring . . . behind the steering
wheel . . . unwinding mile after mile of beautiful scenery i . with a
pause at quaint, cool inns for fresh country-cooked foods. Get the car
in shape and pick out the long, long trail. If tires or accessories are
needed, buy them now.
