tory staff of the Carnegie institu
tion. The apparatus will be Installed
in tho desert sanatorium here by
Dr. D. T. MacDougal of the Carne
g,e Desert Laboratory.
"The Instrument apparatus is
capable ot great precision and will
prove invaluable in studying the
benefits of various light waves to
patients," said' Dr. MacDougal. "It
consists essentially of a small
chamber containing a themocouple
sensitive to the short rays. The
chamber is mounted on an astron
omical clock which forcusses a
tubular lens opening directly on
the sun throughout the day. A
continuous graphic record is kept.
The machine needs virtually no at
tention whereas the spectrosonic
methods of measuring the rays re-'
quire constant attention."
Dr. MacDougal explained that
the necessary element lu the in
strument's construction is an ex
tremely thin layer of silver de-
posited upon a sheet ot quartz
npri ns a lens. The silver coating
of the right thickness permits only
the short rays to pas, and affect

"In aildition to registering the
conslanlly changing intensities of
the short rays," Dr. MacDougal ad-
ded, "the instrument similarity win
