celibacy if they could not have the one they wanted. Today
they decide to cheer up, and new friendships are likely to
come to them that will be quite as rewarding as the one tnat
failed to develop into something more. The love that manes
a happy marriage is not the intense longing of line at lirst
sight, but a deep and permanent affection that gradually
grows up between young people -who have united their el
forts for common ends. On such Saint Valentine may well
smile, while those that conceive violent fancies for geople
without knowing much about them take too many chances. to
please his sound common sense.

Sam Kozer is not to be a candidate fcr governor at the coqi
ing primary election, together with the withdrawal of Sen-
alor Charles Hall lrom the gubernatorial race, clarities mat
ters materially in the political'
far as the governorship is concerned. It is now the general
concensus of opinion that Ike Patterson will walk away with
the honors. Both Hall and Kozer support will fall in a large
degree to Mr. Patterson and his nomination at the coming
primaries is practically assured. Ike will make a good, con
structive governor and has sufficient business aoility to
carry out an administration fully in keeping with the growth
and general prosperity of this great state.

That was certainly a degrading incident reported from
Tia Juana, Mexico, wherein t,wo daughters of a respectable
family were outraged by a set of ruffians under police pro
tection of that conspicuous spot on the Mexican map, the de
plorable incident resulting in t)ic suicide of the entire lamily.
The anguish of the family at the disgrace thrust upon thefti
was more than they could bear and rather than iie and face
the disgrace, the father, mother and two duughters ended
their lives. This, indeed, is a sad incident, but a severe warn
ing to other Americans who may take occasion to visit this
blotch on the globe to "watch their step" less a like occur
rence may be visited upon them.

The New York public library is starting an inquiry t
see which its readers think were the ten worst books issued
last year. There ought to be a lar;:e number which. would
run a close race for that honor. Such ones would como in
two classes. First, there would be ihe silly, trashy, mushy
wushy books, which stimulate- no thought and simply fill up
people's idle time. Second, there would be the cynical and
carping and bitter books, that make one feel the institutions
of society and people are all hypocritical and false, and it is
best to indulge in all pleasures and vices because the world
is inevitably growing worse.

THE ABUNDANCE OF CAPITAL.
One of the remarkable features of the present business
situation, is the fact that capital seems so abundant for ull
wishing to do business. Back in 1920, one of the factors that
produced business disaster was the high rate asked for loans
of money. People who wanted to borrow to finance their
operations had to pay high interest There did not neem to
be capital enough to do the business of the country. The high
prices had made it necessary to have great amounts of cap-
! ital to swing the operators of

! carry on its business. But now we are probably doing more

est continue low. People desiring to carry on business and
who have good security can get all ths money they want at
very moderate rates. This has led to advancing prices of
stocks and bonds, since the dividends on these securities look
