EXPERIMENTING WITH EVIDENCE.
; ' Two Portland policemen, charged with malfeasant in
r : office, and whose case was brought to trial at that city on
; Tuesday of this week, were exonerated and their case thrown
',""ut of court by Circuit Judge Morrow, fhe "evidence"
ZZ (.gainst the two officers had been collected by one W. O. Wil
Jiins at the behest of Governor Pierce who admonished the
'-Z ..""detective" to "go to the mat" in an effort to convict the two
' - men, Wilkins had been given no official authority to gather
- . evidence other than the verbal edict of the governor, accom--'.Z
panied by a check on state funds for f 100, a liberal sum for
; what appeared to be a lot of manufactured evidence that
caused much unfavorable public comment at the metropolis,
;- concerning not only the two officers who were charged with
', neglect of official duty, but also contained damaging reflec-f-Z
I tion on Mayor Baker's administration..
ZZ " . Mr. Wilkins had a pliable mouthpiece and a well lubri
ZZ cated tongue. With an earful of gossip he meandered to the
ZZ home of a Portland minister, unfolded his unsubstantiated
ZZ, tale of crime and vice rampant in that city the expounder
ZZ of the gospel fell hard for the wild rumors turned his guns
loose on Mayor Baker, using his pulpit as a smoke screen for
ZZ verbal tirade, flaying the mayor in no uncertain terms for
ZZ being responsible for much of the gambling among Chinese
a in Portland as well as laying bare other alleged shortcom
ZZ ' Jngs of the city's administration generally.
ZZ Wilkins called into service to aid him In assembling evi
, dence a fellow named Henry Steele, whom Mayor Baker
bad previously dismissed as a city investigator with the rec
ommendation that Steele was "a rat"
i Wilkins, who was the star witness against the officers,
ZZ and had listened attentively to the outpourings of the city's
ZZ gossip mongers was recently suspended by Municipal Judge
i. Ekwall at Portland for practice in the municipal court for
ZZ alleged "case chasing. "
This was a pretty combination to "get the goods" on
Z the two officers and Mayor Baker and made a formidable
ZZ trio with a Portland minister "listening in" to get food for
ZZ ..thought for sermons to be delivered from his pulpit, .the lat
ZZ ,Mr having "marked" the Portland mayor for annihilation,
ZZ ..using the "evidence" supplied by Attorney Wilkins, all of
22 . which has now been declared nil and void without suffi--Z
Tcient worth to even hold the case of the two pojieemen on the
ZZ "court docket " ,.
ZZ The mayor has been ridiculed and defamed by a min-
ZZ ister, two policemen brought unfavorably into the limelight;
ZZ . while thousands of Portland people have been . furnished
r -"nourishment" for the past several weeks that kept their
ZZ tongues wagging from morning until night all due to the
ZZ fact that two individuals, unworthy of the mission in which
ZZ they had been employed, with the backing of the governor
ZZ to "g to the mat," were wont to get mythical evidence to
ZZ convict two officers and cast a stigma on the administration
L of Portland's mayor. ,
'ZZ The sooner people get through experimenting with evi-
dence the better it will be for all concerned. There should
Z .'be just one law for this stripe of individual a permanent

11 Sunday golf may decrease church attendance in some
22 ".cities, but not in Coral Gables, Florida, where the ReV.
ZZ Thomas Benjamin Powell is utilizing the game to swell the
. number of worshippers at the Congregational church. The
ZZ Rev. Mr. Powell has Inaugurated a special Sunday afternoon
'. -service which makes his church a sort of unofficial ''nine
- teenth hole" for the Miami-Biltmore Country Club course,
; ..two blocks away. The service is held at 5 p. m., the hour
at which the exodus from the course is at its height A
special program of music is provided, and it does much to
-" "soothe the ruffled feelings of these golfers who have made
even worse scores than usual. The special service idea was
. ...put in Qperation after the minister had spent many sorrow-
- ing Sunday afternoons watching men and women pius his
- ; church. They passed by the hundreds, but none of them ever
i-2 dropped in. Ho decided all they needed was a little urging.
1. - . Although the plan is still in the experimental state, indica
; - tions are that the new "nineteenth hole" will become an in
2 - stitution. The service is always kept short less than an
Z hour and the calm restfulness of the church is drawing

How can some people be so down right mean and still
ZZ acclaim their good citizenship? How can they live in a com--'
munity and expect to retain the friendship and love of their
rfZ neighbors and commit acts credited only to persons with un-
.developed minds T You often hear the expression, "lower
, . than a dog," but this application when applied to some per
sons is really a credit and greater exaltation than they right
fully deserve. For instance, what of the.man who sets about
to deliberately poison a dog. just because this particular pup
. has as its pal a little boy, but in no way has disturbed the
.. community? And what impression is left in the mind of the
