It has commonly been said that the American people
' are so busy with various excitements that they have ho time
lor reading. 1 ney are supposed to be spending so much
time chasing around in automobiles, attending dances, mov
ies, theaters, ball games, etc., and listening to their radios,
that they have no time left for books, newspapers, and maira
zines. . Yet we read some' days' ago that the sales of books in
Chicago for the last six months of 1925 beat all records.
Also the Chicago public library increased its circulation
500,000 copies last year. The newspapers commonly report
"increased circulations. Magazine literature is flourishing.
It looks as if the people were finding a little time in which to
read, in spite of all their distractions. We are beginning to
get the first results of enlarged education. Since the war,
many more young people are going through high schools
than formerly, and many more are going to colleges' and
such higher institutions of learning. These people, when they
come out, are not going to be satisfied unless they know
something about what is going on in the world. A large part
of the book circulation of course, consists of rather light
novels. But even the person whd reads a frivolous story Of
adventure may have gone up a step from the one who never
used to read at all. Many of the people formerly never read
' because they could not take in ideas through their somewhat
' thick heads. When a person gets to the point where he reads
" easily, he is going to follow the newspapers pretty closely.
' Thus popular intelligence is steadily increasing. Twenty
years from nosy, when a whole generation has had the ad
vantage of enlarged schooling, the difference will be enor--mous.
Ideas that up to now have encountered invincible ob
stacles, will be accomplished without serious difficulties. .

tics at our doors, and they peeve us with their sallies as we
strive to do our chores. I am painting barns and fences, and
