WASHINGTON, Dec. SO.Presl-
uent coolidge was urged today by
Senators McNary, Oregon, and
Shortrldge, California, Republians,
to continue representation of those
two state on tbe shipping board.
Both declared later that they were
encouraged, but the indication was
given that the President had reach
ed no conclusion a to whom he
would nominate to succeed B. E.
Haney, Democrat of Oregoon, ' and
Meyer Llssner, Republican of Cali
fornia, aa commissioners.
, 'McNary particularly urged the
appointment of Marshall N. Dana.
Democrat, a Portland newspaper
man, aa successor to Haney. who
has been iu disagreement with the
president on the marine policy and
will not be continued In office. In
the event Coolidge desires to name
a Kepubllcau from tbe northwest
states, McNary urged thevseloction
of Frank L. Shull of Portland.
As a successor to Llssner. Short-
ridge supported Phillip Teller, Re
publican of San Francisco. . He al
so proposed H. U. Brandensteln or
San Francisco if a Democrat is to
be named from that section.
President Coolidge Intends to flH
the two vacancies by the selection
of both a Republican and a Demo
crat but It waa indicated he had
not determined which portion of
the Pacific Coast should furnish
each.
Selection of two Pacific coast
member to the shipping board is
further complicated by the advo
cacy of Senator Jonea of Washing
ton, chairman of the senate com
merce committee, of H. Y. Saint of
Seattle to one of the posts. Saint
