John Gladden, aged 80 years,
was found dead yesterday In hla
cabin located west of Roseburg
near the Intersection of the Look
ing Class and Melrose roads. Ap
parently he had been dead alnre

The body was found when a
neighbor went to the cabin to In
vite the man out for dinner. Coro
ner Hitter waa notified and made
an Investigation, finding that death
waa caused suddenly by heart fail
ure. Although the body had lain In
he cabin for several daya It waa In
fair Hate of preservation.
Mr. Gladden has lived alone on
Mi email farm for several years.
He leaves several children, located
in various parte of Idaho. A eon, O.
P Gladden, of Moscow, la on hla
way to this city. The funeral will
be held tomorrow morning at 10

which are reported ao that proper
ontorcement or the laws of the
state la Impossible.

on the Increase. New lawa are
being added by every legialature,
yet the aheriff'a office of Douglas
county haa received no additional
help for the paat twenty yeara.
"In former daya the tax office
and criminal departmenta could
be combined and In tai collection
aeaaon extra clerks were employ
ed. We have saved a great deal
of money In the tax department
by aegregatlng the two offices and
cutting down the extra, clerk hire.
When the two offices were toge
ther the enter deputy acted as
Jailer as well aa tending to tax
collections. Now we have our
tax force down to the point where
all peraona are busily employed
all the year and we require a very
amall amount of extra help.

field.

to a point where one man alone
cannot handle It. I have', the
right, given by law, to call In
extra deputies as I need - them
from other polnta of the county,
but this la not aa efficient nor as
economical aa would be a salaried
deputy. , , .

from outside polnta, I must call
them to Roseburg, pay. them mile
age here, give them instructions,
pay mileage back, and, then mile

TURKEY THEFTS ALLEGED
Jess and William Wiles, who re
side east of Oakland, were arrest-
ed yesterday charged with the theft
of turkeye. They are accused of
having atolen ten turkeys, the
property of J. E. Cooper, and to
have sold three of the birds. Seven
turkeys Identified by Mr. Cooper
as his property, were found at the
Wiles place. The two men were
arrested and are being held in tbe
county Jail pending a hearing.
