Chester A. Beaman, the - engi
neer who was most active in lo
cating the Scottsburg-Reed8port
section of the TJmpqua highway,
died at Coquille on December 14
and was bnrled at Scottsburg last
Friday. Mr. Ileaman, a native of
Oregon, was considered one of the
best engineers of tho state, and
while employed by Douglas county
undertook ode 01 the most diffi
cult und dangerous tasks which
road engineers have fated. In lo
cating the coast road engineers
were swung, suspended by ropes,
ovor hlRb cliffs. Ilecause of his
demonntrated ability Mr. Beaman
was employed by the government.
Tills potdtlon, however, entailed a
great deal of eyestrain, and as Mr.
ileaman was suffering from injur
ies sustained in a dynamite explo-
siun, he resigned from the govern
ment Job and accepted a position
with Cuos county.
Chester Arthur Beaman was
born In Oregon City, Oregon, Dec.
1, lsai. He wllb bis parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Win. Beaman, moved to
lkton, Oregon, wbeu he was 12
yuars of age. lie united with the
Christian church at Klkton when
he was 13 years of age, during the
ministry of Kev. loca.
He waa united In matrimony
with Violet Sawyers June 2ud,
18 17. He as a World War veteran,
enlisting In tho 3rd Engineers and
served overseas.
