- BUSINESS EBB AND FLOW.
It is a singular thing the way the tides of prosperity
and adversity rise and fall in the business world. Anyone
would think that after a financial depression has happened,
people would so thoroughly have learned the lessons of it,
that it would be many years before any sucli thing would
occur again. Yet there is a cycle of prosperity and adversity;
and good times a"re succeeded by bad times, and bad times
by good times. The years 1893, 1907, 1914, and 1921 were
hard time periods, but every such period sets in motion
causes tending to promote recovery. And then when good
times dome, certain human errors make themselves manifest,
and the country gets into the same old trouble again. But
fortunately it does not last very long. The federal reserve
act created important safeguards against financial panics,
by massing the assets of the banks so that the whole credit
of the country could be used t protect solvent institutions,
and also creating machinery tending to check processes of
inflation. But there are causes' of hidifstVihT depression that
can not be touched by any banking system: - The depression
of 1920 to 1922 was caused largely by public' extravagance;
People spent money with- such great freedom as to lift prices
to an extreme heighth, resulting in a buyer'3 strike. Then the
merchants found themselves loaded with i volume of goods
far beyond the ability of the country td buy. There is no
immediate danger of any such crash at this time. Yet pros
perity brings its perils. The people should be careful how
they buy beyond their means, as such a policy will lead to
trouble. Also business men do well to keep their stocks con
stantly moving, and they should not allow themselves to get
too heavily loaded with merchandise.

Plans are being formulated for a National Good Will
Week to be observed in the principal cities of the country,
the purpose of which is to create good feeling between .peo
ple of different ideas and traditions. The plan calls for the
sppolntrfient of good will committees, and for dinners and
uch social events, to be addressed by spokesmen of various
religious faiths and economic elements, in the effort to pro
duce a more genuine spirit of harmony between groups some
times antagonistic. Half of the clfestf and religious conflict
Df the nation occurs because of lack of. mutual comprehen
lion. We get false ideas about people whom we do not know
very well, and think they cherish purposes which they do
not entertain at all. When you get all these folks together
and find that after all they are your own neighbors and they
pre good Americans and think about as you do, friction dis
appears and a new spirit of co-operation is born.
o
A sign was noticed in a real estate office some days ago,
reading "Use your rent money to buy your own home." It
was good philosophy and not many families that have fol
lowed that plan ever regretted it. The philosophy of this
thing is, that when you pay rent you not merely pay the cost
of taxes, repairs, insurance, etc., but yoil have to pay the
landlord for the pains lie takes and the efforts he makes to
give you service. He is entitled to that compensation so long
as you depend on him for that service. But many families
PCpfer to serve themselves in that way, and thus pay this
l'Cpit to themselves.

' IF YOU SMOKE
Let's hone you don't, lt'a one of
the unnecessary habits. It ha a
bad eft ret on your teeth, gum,
ringers, lung's, digestion and heart,
and ita good effects are Imaginary.
The reason many women have for
smoking Is that It Rives them
something to do with Ihelf hands.
This ia Ihe worst alibi of all. for
few women look well when smok
ing; the hands must be held awk
wardly for there's no graceful way
of bunching the finger to hold a
cigarette.
My objections to cigarettes are
based on aesthetic rather than
moral reasons. 1 don't think It's a
good looking habit. But if you
must smoke, remember these hint.
Kinse your mouth and gargle
your throat with somo good anti
septic to take away the taste and
otlor of tobacco. A good one la
three drachma of tincture of myrrh
and threo drachms of glycerine la
four ounces of water.
lie more careful than ever of the
teeth; many cigarettes contain
stuff harmful to the gums, so when
the teeth are brushed the brush
should go over the guma too. I'd
suggest a highly flavored tooth
paaie, again to kill the odor of to
bacco.
The fingers that hold the cigar
ette will stain yellow. It's quite
hard to remove this, but rubbing
the skin with a very weak solution
of oxalic acid will do so. The acid
should be washed off at once and
cold cream rubbed on. or the skin
will be too dry. A cigarette bolder
at leant will save the fingers
from staining.
Had stains may have to be rub
bed with pumice stone, and the
place cold creamed afterward.
Powdered pumlee, by the way.
must be used on the front teeth to
remove the brown stains that will
appear there.

HOT WORDS FLY
AT MEETING OF
BANKING BOARD
i
The housekeeper's duly Ues not
only In keeping her home clean :
and her meuls nourishing, but also j
lu keeping her ftice smiling and i
her tongue guarded. For although ;
Hie man of the house Is the head '
of the home, the woman of the j
house Is the foreman of the home.
She has It In her power to make
Ihe home either a dreary place or
a place of peate and cheer.
I know a woman who long ago
made a decision to "lock her trou
bles in her heart and throw the
key away," as she . expressed It.
Without realizing It. she had form
ed Ihe habit of pouring out her lit-,
tie dully household tragedies and i
trlitls at mealtime. One day at din-1
ner she noticed that her husband :
and children had suddenly become j
blue. At the same moment she i
realized that she hud been "whin-'
Ing" had been unloading upon her
listeners a gloomy story concern
ing a neighbor who was constantly t
naming in the buck door and talk-'
lug boresomely for 14urs on end.
In telling me of the Incident, she
said: r-
"All at once I saw that If the
neighbor's talk bored me a repe
tition of It would bore my family!
8o I promised myself from that day
forward td be cheerful and tell on
ly Interesting things. And what a
difference It has made! Each meal
Is a little festival now."
Of course I do not mean that we
should keep our big troubles to
ourself. The various members of
a family should share one anothe
er's real troubles. I referred only
to the petty Irritations which we
housekeepers encounter dally.
What good can It do to pour these
out upon our family? Life Is so
full of Interests of things which
give us delight of goals beyond
which call to our ambition that
It is foolish to waste time going
over past irritations.
Have you ever noticed that a
bore never seeks another bore
when he feels like talking? No. he
seeks a person who Is not a bore.
I have thought about this often
and wished that all bores could be
segregated for the protection of
busy people. Hut they would not
stand each other for a minute!
Why? Because bores are selfish
people who want to talk about only
what Interests them. And, natur
ally. If everybody about them were
doing the same thing, they would
have no listeners. A bore must,
have a victim.
In studying th home life of var
ious families. I have observed that
the housekeeper is often a bore.
Not the kind of bore who talks
about what interests her, but the
kind who talks about what Irritates
her or tries her patience. It Is
purely selfish to recite our dally
household annoyances. Let u re
solve to stop It
