ment council of the League of Na
tions today voted to Invite the
United States and Soviet Bussla to
become members of the special
commission which la to be created
to prepare for an international
conference for the reduction of
armaments.
Another gesture toward the
United States was made when the
economic committee of the League
voted that international economic
conference proposed by France
should not be limited to members
of the League but should be truly
world wide in scope. This means
that the United States will be in
vited to participate.

dent Coolidge will defer considera
tion of the invitation for American
membership on the special . com
mission to work out plans ior re
duction and limitation of arma
ments, extended today by the dis
armament council of the League
of nations, until the text of the

widely known bankers and hop
growers of this part of Oregon,
died aboard the steamship Presi
dent Monroe In the east Indies,
according to information received
here t;day by Louis Lachmund,
one of his business associates.
Death was caused by ptomaine
poisoning.
McLaughlin was president of
the Independence National Bank,
and ot the Capital Ice and Cold
Storage Company In Salem.
He was born near Toronto,
Canada, 68 years ago, and was a
graduate of Toronto University.

bid of the Dollar Interest for the
Admiral-Oriental Uue, was rejected
by the shipping board today. I
In taking this action the board
approved unanimously the recom
mendation of President Crowley of
the Fleet corporation. The offer
was submitted by U- Stanley Dol
lar, vice president of the Dollar
line. The abips will b re-advertised
for sale with the understanding
that if no satisfactory bid is re
ceived the agency for the line now
held for the fleet corporation by
ike. Dollar interests Will be trans
ferred to someone else.
Th line runs from Seattle to the
far east, operating five passenger

Dollar proposed to charter the
vessel at $100 a month each for
