CHIEFS TO PLACE
XMAS TREE ON CASS
AND JACKSON STS.
An interesting and well attend
ed meeting of the Umpqua Chiefs
was held last night at the office
ot Chief A. T.Lawrence. There was
lengthy discussion concerning
the Christmas tree, which Is usu
ally placed nt the intersection of
Cass and Jackson streets, and
Chief Ness was appointed to ob
tain the city's permission to erect
the tree again this year. Mr.
Ness obtained the consent of the
mayor this morning and stvps to
place the tree will be taken at
once.
Committees were named to ar
range the details for the annual
meeting, banquet and installation
of officers, to he held at the K.
P. hall on December 15. This will
be a Joint meeting with the Ump
qua Squaws and the Installation
will be followed by a dance.
A nominating committee with

was earned and will propose iRe
officers to serve for the encuing
year.

The school district boundary
board, which consists of the coun
ty court and the school superin
tendent, met today to hear the
application of Tyee residents for
a division of the district. 1 here
has been considerable complaint
in that vicinity for some time,
owing to the fact that children
in one half of the district must
cross the river. It was at first
proposed to erect a bridge, but
now an application Is being made
for a new district. The matter
has been taken undnr advisement
and the board will meet aeain on
the 12th to give its derision.
