The trial of Omar W. Murphy,
charged with mannlauKliter, an the
result of an ulluged beating ad
ministered to his wife, Klia, lust
March, was resumed in the cir
cuit court thla morning, after a
three days recess, and the entire
morning session waa devoted to
the defense cross examination of
physicians, callud by the state,
with the exception of 8ister Mary
of the Sacred Heart Hospital,
who testified as to the last mo
menta of the dead woman. Doc
tor's Geary and - Clancy of this
city, and Dr. Woods of Ashland,
were ihe slate witnesses under
cross examination.
The state theory that death was
caused by an embolism, in lay
terms, a blood clot, was combat
ted vigorously by the defense, and
the questions covered every pos
aibl cause of death. The queries
were confined to tbe hypothetical
question asked ly the state. Ac
cording to the state's evidence, all
the vital organs of Mrs. Jdurphy
were in a healthy condition nnd it
Is contended that by a ''process of
elimination," embolism caused
the death.
Dr. Geary was cross-examined
relative to an examination made
of the spine, when the body was
exhumed after ten days, and found
It in a normal condition.
The cross-examination of medi
cal men by . the derone is ex
pected to take the remainder of the
day.

ses of death are undeterminable

MUSIC TEACHERS' CON
VENTION NEXT SPRING
Representatives of the various
booster organisations of the city
were guests at the Roseburz Music
Teachers' luncheon yesterday held
at the home of Mrs. A. J. Young.
wnere plans of the music conven
tion, to be held In the spring, were
discussed. '
In the absence of Gordon Cook,
corresponding secretary, Walter
Germain- who had been requested
to gather data on transportation
rates to and from Portland tor the
delegatea to the conVenion here
this spring, gave an approximate
idea of the coBt. A report of the
amount of money cleared from the
benefit dance for the Douglas
County Concert Band was given,
and It was found that approximate
ly 175.00 will be turned over to the
band for its expenditures.
It was voted that three new mu
sicians of this city. Donald Parker,
violinist; Hazel Goodwin, music su
pervisor of the public schools, and
Mr. Applehoff. the band director,
be extended an Invitation to join
the association. It being Mr.
Cook's Intention stated . pre
viously to resign from the po
sition of corresponding secretary
on account of business which takes
up his entire spare time, the presi
dent appointed Miss Lucille Sap
pington as temporary correspond
ing secretary. The important busi
ness of the meeting was the mat
ter of the State Music Teachers'
convention, and Mrs. C. 8. Heinline
rave an Interesting outline of the
things expected to make the con
vention a success here In the
spring, and stated that one ot the
finest things Roseburg could do
would be to extend hospitality of
their homes to the delegates during
the two days they will be here. A
few of the representatives from the
city's boos(er organizations were
unable to be present. " -
Mrs. J. C. Fonsler, president .of
the Koseburg Woman's club: T. H.
Ness, of the Umpqua Chiefs; B.
W. Bates, of the Roseburg News
Review, and L. Antles. representing
the Chamber of Commerce, for
their organizations, stated that
they would extend help in every
way to make the convention a suo
cess, and urge the people of the
city to extend their hospitality, op
ening their homes to the 100 dele
gates. L. Antles, for the Chamber
of Commerce, promised to furnish
the strawberries for the delegates,
and cars to transport them about
the city on sight-seeing tours.
There being a number of conflict
ing dates in the early and middle
part of May, the tentative dates for
the convention are Friday and Sat
urday, May 28 and 29. Mrs. C. S.
Heinline will leave the latter part
of the week for Portland, where
with Mr. David Campbell, head of
the organization in that city, she
will meet with the board of music
and discuss the dates and plans tor
the organization.
Dr. Brumfield's life was a tragic
failure but he left $20,000.00 of in
surance for his family. How much
