penitentiary from Lane county on
October 26. 1921, to aerve two
yeara for turnery. Hla borne waa
In Cottage Grove. He waa dis
missed April 26, 1925, at the ex
piration of hla minimum aentence,
receiving time off for good be-
havor. Lloyd waa 2 yeara old
when he first entered the penlteu-
tiary.
Governor pierce aald he had
received leaa than a doten lettera
urging clemency for Lloyd. One
of these letterswere wrtten bv the
I prisoner's mother, who Uvea near
Albany. She Informed the gov
ernor that ahe waa without funda
and waa unable to come to Salem
and make a personal appeal In be
half of her kid. Four of the
writer alleged that Lloyd is
mentally defective and probably
waa not. responsible for Ms act.

CONTEST ANNOUNCED
Chester Stark of Sulherlln high
school, waa announced today as the
winner of the Norton Canned Food
Essay contest, started by Frank J.
Norton, Sutheriln canneryman, as
a part of the observance of can
nery week. Mr. Norton offered $20
aa prliea for both high school and
7th and 8th grade essays. 18 for
high schools and $12 for the
grades. Velma Foe of Roseburg,
won second prize for high achoola.
The grade school winners were
Daniel Harnett, Roseburg; Rose
Frost, Elklon; and Henrietta
