Editor News-Review: As a fruit
grower engaged In raising apples
In Douglas county, 1 have taken
considerable Interest in the work
and recommendations of tho re
cent horticultural committee' In
eesslon at lloseburg. Expecting,
along with other growers that
see the real cause of our troubles
In this line of horticulture and as
promptly point out to us the cor
rect plan to remedy our mistakes.
Have they accomplished this re
sult? . Let us carefully consider
their report. We are reminded
that an average production of the
present apple acreage of the IT, P.
Is sufficient to meet the demands
of both the national and export
trade. Does not this statement
appear odd In view of the fart
that fruit experts of tho Pacific
Northwest are recommending to
the Interior Department that the
great Columbia River Renin be
Irrigated aa the world has need
ot the fruit and other products
that thl. mighty empire could
produce? Not only this, hut the
department is seriously consider
ing the reclaiming of this great
body of land, having In mind that
It must be put In high priced pro
duct, like fruit, to enable the
settlers to pay out on the project.
Now again, for the report of the
committee. "It Is douotful whe
ther orchard. that produce on tho
average less than 200 boxes per
acre can be made to pay." l
you, the apple grower, of Douglas
county, consider for a moment
(hat those statements even grant
ing them t be correct, get to be
bottom of Jurt why we here ten
thousand of ruined nd neglected
orchards in Dougla. County, many
of them apple orchards. It must
be that our committee of fruit
expert, do not deaire to unduly
excite u. or they would tell-u. the
blunt truth, that a. long a. we
pontlnue Jo ell apples for lew

Yours for all those orchards In
full operation, . . . t
