Vautf of Antitoxin
' ' Explained by Doctor
Toxins are the poisons of disease
nnd produce the ayiuptonia com
mon to the disease after circulating
through, the blood.
Antitoxins are suhstanres that
work against or neutralise the tox
ins In any given cases, nnd they
are produced by the use of the bac
teria of the toxins. These are In
jected Into an animal, usually a
horse. In Increasing iltMes, until It
hecomca hubltuuted to them anil Is
no longer made III by them. The
Immunity or resistance resides In
the Mood, which has now developed
mechanism ngnlnst the pol""-
The animal's blood Is then drawn
off In siuull quantities, tillered and
purified. This blnoil la In turn In
jected Into the blood of a man,
where It exerts the same protecting
Influence against the partlculur
toxin by which it was produced as
It did In the horse.
This Is very briefly the nafure,
and mode of oieratinn of antitoxic
serums. The use of an antitoxin In
diphtheria has already saved count
less lives and has changed the once
dreaded and fatal disease to a rath
er simple complaint If diagnosed
early and treated with antitoxin.
The discoveries of the Dicks and
of Doches promise to give the same
relief from scarlet fever when meth
ods, originated only In 10.4, are per
fected for this particular disease.
Dr. Walter B. James In the Outlook.
CONDITION IS SERIOUS
Tile condition of J. R. Throne of
Edenbower, who recently suffered
a second stroke of paralysis is con
sidered very critical and little
hope Is held for his recovery. Mr.
Throne, who is very well known
throughout the county, has been
making a desperate fight against
oddH and the attending physician
toxlay said that he is gradually
losing ground.
The Swanee Serenaders are play
ing for a big Jitney dance at Rain
