WASHINGTON. Nov. 2. The
prosecution rested Its case against
Colonel William Mitchell late to
day. . The defense then moved to
strike out four of the eight speci
fications against the Colonel, but
the court recessed until tomorrow,
without ruling on that motion or
deciding whether It would summon
the long list of witnesses submit
ted earlier In the day by defense
counsel.
Request Is Sweeping
The army and navy officers for
whom subpoenaes were requested
by the defense Included not only
those In direct charge of the two
air services, but those who have
general staff supervision over the
rrmy and navy organizations as a
whole.
In addition, various aircraft ex
perts and other civilians were on
the list submitted by the colonel's
counsel. They Included Donald Mac
Millan, the Arctic explorer; brover

Mrs. Zachary . Laasdowne, widow
of the commander of the Shenan

the baseball czar, and Anton Heln

The defense also requested that

The court proceeded with the
actual opening of trial without In
dicating whether it would summon
those named on Colonel Mitchell's
list of witnesses. Another motion
by Mitchell's counsel to dismiss the
charges on the ground that the
court had no jurisdiction, was
quickly rejected. The prosecution
called to the stand as Its first wit
ness A. A. W. Yeager, reporter for
the San Antonio Texas "Light", to
w hom Colonel Mitchell gave a copy
of his San Antonio statement,
containing the accusations that led
to his court martini.
WASHINGTON, Nor. 2. Colonel

navy department, as witnesses.
Several other high officials of

cheat drive starts off tomorrow
morning, when the five teams
start out with the aim of raising
the full quota of 18.000 before
the end of the week. The first
day will be spent in soliciting the
buslnexs district. After all of the
business houses, fartoriea and of
flees have been visited, assign
ments will be made lo the resi
dential district and every home In -
Kosenurg will be visited.
For the first time ln the history
of the city, the people are being
asked to give their money for
charitable and benevolent purpo
ses in a systematic and orderly
manner.
Heretofore each organisation
has conducted Its own drive se
parately, haa been forced to spend
money for advertising and enter
into other expenses. The com
munity chest plan groups the ex
pense and puts the money under
one organisation to be distributed
carefully and in a manner where
It will do the most good.
Ten. organsatlnns or special
funds ore Included in the proposed
budget for the Roseburg commun
ity cheat. This Includes practically
all benevolent and charitable or
sanitations Ih the city, and In '
adaitlon provldra a moderate sum
ror the aitmlnlntration work. - -The
budget la as follows:
Salvation Army. II2H; Camp
Klre lllrls Association, $.100; Dou
glas County Concert Band, 00;
Hoy Hinuls of America. $11,200;
Corvallls Karm Home. $201); the
White Shield Home, $200; Louise
Home, S-'n0 ; Albertina Kerr
Home. $200; Near East Relief,
$100; Emergency Fund (local),
$1200; Administration. $600..
Total $8,000.
This budget provides as much
for each organization or cause as
they have formerly received from'
Roreburg, less the amount unu-
ully expended In making their
drive or campaign for funds. ' Al
though tho budget Is small , In
comparison with other towns,.yet
It is believed to be as large aa
ran he successfully handled for
the first year. . , .
Roseburg is patterning largely
after Marshfield. where conditions
are practically tne same. Marsh
field haa had very great success
with the community cheat plan,
and men from that city have gi
ven the local committee a (freat
deal of valuable help In the. way
of aititgesliona. Marahfield Is now
building up a fund for local
emergencies, securing a small ad-
ell l Ion each year, so that in the
tf,ittttre should some great cata
t strophe vl-ll Ihe city there will
he fnnda on hand to cope with
the situation.
The tennis which have lieen ap
i pointed to conduct the drive are
as follows:
Captain Lieutenant
I A. II. Crawford Kenneth Quine
in. C. linker L. II. Monro
V. T. Jack'on R. W. Maratera
, W. O. ('linger W. II. Day
,.M. K. Rice
! The lieutenant to work with
Mr. Itlce has not yet been select
ed, hut will be chosen before the
final meeting nf the committee
tonight. Each of the captains hits
jthe right lo select his own work-
Iers.
Men who are naked to work
on these committees are urged to
respond. L. II. Moore on Satur
day wenl without his lunch In
jorder to have the time to give
to the organization of the team
of which he la a member. While
he was willing to give np nf his
own limo tn this work, he found
several men who declined lo
serve on Ihe team because they
were too busy.
All nf Ihe men who are taking
the responsibility of this cam
paign upon their shoulders are
busy men. They are. however,
unselfishly giving nf their time,
as woll as nf their money, for
what Ihey consider lo lie their
civic duly. Their work should
not he msde harder by the selfish
refusal of olhera to aid In any
way possible.
The flrat part nf the drive will
be centered entirely In the busi
ness district.
Prospect cards are being mode
nut bearing the name, nf ail bust-ne-s
houses, firms, corporations,

up among the teams, and each
