The dinner sponsored by the la-

church, today In the basement of
the armory waa a financial suc
cess and well attended, crowds of
people attending during the noon

I The Roseburg Woman'a Club
I held a rummage salt! at the Sykea
building today, raising funds for
the clubhouse to be built in the
near future. The members are ex
pecting to hold the sales during
the winter and expect to have a
permanent place where they will
give the aalea occasionally. A
number of articles of clothing and
practical things were donated and
on sale, and the sale was well pa
tronised.
Mrs. Stanton Paaaea Through
Mrs. Jennie M. Stanton, who for
many yeara was a resident of Rose
burg, passed tnrougn tnis city yes
terday evening on her way to Cali
fornia. Mra. Stanton haa been re
siding In Seaside but haa been or
dered by her physician to go to
California. She will spend the win
ter with her daughter In San Fran
cisco. Several of her frlenda met
her at tha train yeaterday and en
joyed a ahnrt visit with her aa she
passed through.

A divorce was granted today to

Fined for Killing Deer
Oeorge A. Halllday today paid a
fine of $50 and coats In the local
Justice court, after entering a plea
of guilty to the charge of killing a
female deer. '-
Fire Department Called
The fire department was cal
led out last night for a flue fire
at the Klks Club. The heat Set
fire to the bourd lining outside
the chimney plug In the basement
and filled the building full -of
smoke. No damage was done.

Overcoat Recovered
Bryan Lambert, traient,
was arrested here lant night by
Chief of Police Ketch, charged
with the theft of an overcoat from
a Dillard resident. The owner of
the overcoat refused to prosecute
and Lambert was released.
Collar Bone Broken
Kdward Hagar, son of Dr. and
Mra. Charles H. Hagar, sustnlned
a broken collar bone while
gaged In practice scrimmage with
the high school football team
Thursday night. The boy waa In

blow fractured the bone.

sponsored a food sale today, hold

quite a successful one and pro
ceeds will go to make up the annual
budget, to be used for the Child
ren's Home, the Red Cross and

F. Thlele, of Oakland, who has

bers of the department were pre
sented with gifts. A social time

Judge J. W. Hamilton this
afternoon issued an order
calling the November grand
jury for Monday, November
2. The grand Jury will have
a week to dispose of Its In-
vesications before the No-
vember term of the Circuit
court convenes on the 9th.

pony express race, advertising a
film production, started from Sa
lem at 1:11 o'clock this morning
and the riders expected to reach
their destination In Portland about
I: SO this afternoon. The horses
are ridden by A. E. Springer and
his ion, Elmer Springer, of Black
foot, Idaho. The elder Springer Is
a cowpuncher of note, who In 1913,
at the Pendleton Round-up. rode
Bill McAdoo, a broncho that had
never been ridden before.
- Frequent changes of horses will
be made between Salem and Port
land, with stops scheduled at
Brooks, Hubbard. Aurora, Canby,
Oregon City, and Mllwsukle. The
horses ridden out of Salem were
shod with rubber, and those finish
ing the race In Portland will also
be robber shod. On the Interven
ing stretches the horses will be
shod with metal.
