The Street Railway Commission
ot the city of Detroit and Mayor
John W. Smith have approved the
purchase ot M more Oraham Broth
ers twenty-one passenger street
car type motor coaches, making a
total of Its bought tram Oraham
Brothers within a year. This ao
tioa ot the commission, taken In
accordance with the recommenda
tion ot H. U. Wallace, general man
ager ot the Detroit street railways,
was later approved by the city
council.
' General Manager ' Wallace, In
recommending the purchase atated
that the lit Oraham Brothers
coaches already in service have
been operated over t.OOU.000 miles
and have proved entirely satisfac
tory. The department ot street rail
ways started motor coach opera
tions on January 1, 1925, and have
gradually extended their coach
lines until they now operate over
routes totaling 63 miles. Tha new
equipment will, when placed In ser
vice, Increase the mileage ot their
coach routes by 43 miles, giving
them a total of 96 miles. Trolley
cars are operating over 396 miles
ot track, and the 85 miles of new
motor coach routes will Increase
the mileage of the entire transpor
tation system by about 25 per cent.
This indicates the rapid expan
sion of Detroit's transportation
system, making ase of street ears
and motor coaches, each in Its beat
adaptable field, and thus furnishing
to the people a co-ordinated serv
ice through th interchange of
transfer privileges. The motor
coach is taking a leading part In
expending transportation systems
by providing service to new dis
tricts at a very much smaller in
vestment than would have to be
made if tracks and overhead trolley
lines were installed.
The department of street rail
ways Is also inaugurating a new
feature In operating coach service
between the important railroad sta
tions and the principal hotels in
the business sections of the city.
This should prove very convenient
to the large number of visitors con
tinually arriving in Detroit who de
sire to reach the downtown section
ot the city without the necessity
of Inquiring for directions.

ers motor coaches la one ef the
