HE UTILE RED
SCHOOL HOUSE
VS. MODERN ONE
AicUtrd Pros LotMd Wlr.)
NEW YOHK, Oct. 21. The Lit-
j Red Schoolhouse of long ago
ould scarcely recognize Its off
Ting, the modern city school
lllding of today, if we may Judge
on the report on "A Health Bur
y of 86 Cities," to be Issued to
orrow by the American Child
ealth association, of. which Mr.
erbert Hoover Is president.
.The well and the oaken bucket
t the yard have given way to run-
OK water and the bubbling drlnk
i fountain. There are Inside tol
ls and wash bowls. The "family"
wl on the roller Is a thing of by
me days. Even the "chummy"
a dipper has disappeared. There
steam heat today In place of the
ove In the center of the school
on. While the Janilor still
'elds his broom and feather dus-
r, yet even here the growing de
mand for better health practices
-is resulted in the entrance of the
truum cleaner Into the school
lllding.
The survey was conducted by the
isearch division of the association
i J 924. Kive experienced public
"tilth men visited altogether Hi
Ilea scattered over 31 slates. This
icluded all the cities In the coun
try with populations between 40,000
and 7U.WV, according to the IKiO
census. Health officers, school su
perintendents, mayors. Chamber of
Commerce, secretaries, supervisors
at child hygiene societies i
many others were Interviewed In
the effort to get facts on the actiV'
itles which cities are conducting to
safeguard the health of tnelr
children. Mine hundred school
buildings were visited and Informa
tion gathered about sanitation and
the health practices ot the pupils.
Drinking water was found avail
able In all but three school build
ings. Only thirteen schools have
failed to banish the common drink
ing cup. Ninety-three per cent of
the schools visited are equipped
with Inside toilets. A standard of
one lavatory to every eighty pu
pils wss observed In every build-
lug In forty-nine cities. There
were nine cities, however, which
were notably deficient In this
spect. The surveyors reported fa
vorably on the cleanliness of school
toilets.
The report Issues a warning
against tho fire haza.-ds still exist
ing In some school buildings as fol
lowa: "A building, particularly a
frame building ot more than one
story should either be equipped
wltn an outside fire escape to the
upper floors or else there should
be two distinct slui.ways In dif
ferent parts of the building. The
surveyors observed the schools
with these facts in mind. In only
thirty-seven cities were all the
schools visited thus protected
against fire. In nine cities not one
of the buildings was thus safe
guarded." The report goes on fur
ther to stale that the correction
of these conditions Is the very
least that a city can do to protect
its children from a danger that is
real.
All the schools In Highland,
Mich., Atlantic City . N. J., and
Charlotte, N. C, are cleaned with
vacuum cleaners. Twelve cities in
all are reported to be using vacuum
cleaners In one or more schools.
Nearly all schoolrooms visited
are equipped with individual seats,
although about 8 per cent still
double seats. Seventy-sevea per
cent of the schools have adjustable
seats.
Schoolrooms are keot at too
high a temperature for health, ac
cording to the report, which states
that, for the best Interest of the
school child, temperatures should

gested by the fact that thermome

The cities of California and the
