HEADLIGHT LI
On September 1, 1923, the new
motor Yehlcle headlight law wont
Into effect. This law provides that
not headlamp lens or headlamp con
trol derieo shall be used on motor
Tehlcles in Oregon after that dato
unless it has been approved by the
secretary of state, and auihorlied
for sale and use, after having been
subjected to test by the United
States bureau of standards as to
conformity to specifications for
motor vehicle headlamps prescribed
In the law. Thirty-one headlamp
control devices have been tested
and approved and are, therefore,
legal In Oregon to date.
The traffic force of the slate, and
peace officers generally, are tak
ing steps to enforce compliance
with the law and those niotnriMs
who have not had the lighting
equipment on their motor vt hiclea
adjusted or secured evidence there
of from an official adjusting sta
tion, should do so at once, other
wine they eubjecf thennelvea to the
penalties of Ihe law for failure to
conform to its requirements.
To date more than 465 official ad
justing stations have been authoris
ed throughout the state and more
than 1270 mechanics have been ex- j
amine as to their proficiency and
. knowledge of the law1 and have
been licensed as adjusters. Addi-
tlonal adjusting stations are being!
i authorized as rapidly as applica-1
i tlons are received and conditions
. of the law complied with, and other
I ailitistern are twins' licensed so
! that facilities for compliance with
tho law are adequate for all de
mands. These adjusting stations
reported that .substantially 65.000
cars had been adjusted up to Oc
tober 1, 1925, which Is about one
third of the licensed cars in the
state. These figures lndlcato a
general inclination on the part of
motor vehicle owners tq conform
to the law.
Bulletins containing complete
lists of those headlamp lenses, re
flectors, and control devices that
have been approved for sale and
use on motor vehicles In Oregon,
In compliance with the law, have
been Issued by the secretary of
state from time to time and these
are posted conspicuously In all ad
justing stations. All peace officers
and magistrates of the state havs
been tnrnlhed with Vnnte of these
bulletins and all necessary Informa
tion relating to the provisions and
requirements of the law.
Concensus of opinion among mo
torists who have had their head
lamps adjusted' In conformity to
the faw, reflect general satisfaction
with the results. The Oregon law
la substantially the same as ex
ists In most of the states wherein
effort is msde to regulate headlamps-
and control devices on mo
tor vehicles. California has had a
similar law in effect for the past
four years and Oregon motorists
who have traveled In that state and
observed conditions are enthusias
tic advocates of headlight regula
tion such as contemplated under
the Oregon law.
