FIRE PREVEmor.
iriSCP.00LSUP.0ED
TO
' Many ot the activities carried on
durbig the observance ot Fire Pre
vention Week are centered In the
schools. This la In recoguillon of
the importance ot molding the hab
its of children so they will practice
carefulness during the remainder of
their Uvea. In many instances the
lessons they learn this week will
be transmitted to the parents.
Equally as Important as educat
ing the children In fire prevention
la the matter ot protecting the
school buildingo in which they
spend so much of their time. It
is estimated the public schools of
the couulry are attended by 25,000,
ooo boys aud girls, most of whom
range in ago tram tour to sixteen
years. Unfortunately, uiauy o(
theae buildings are veritable lire
traps and hundreds of Uvea have
been lost due to fire occurring in
them, in this connection the Insur
ance department ot the chamber ot
commerce ot the United Slates
says:
livery year witnesses the burn
ing of numerous school buildings
anil often such fires are attended
by heavy Iosb of life. From the
standpoint of loss of life the most
disastrous fire which occurred last
year involved the destruction ot a
school building. During the course
of an entertainment which was be
ing held at a school house at liabbs
Switch, Okla., last Christmas eve
some of the decorations were acci
deiitly ignited. The flames spread
bo rapidly aud a panic ensued at
moat immediately. The one narrow
exit leadlug to safely was soon
Jammed by the victims in their
struggle to escape. Kgreas through
windows was barrled because ot
heavy wire netting which had been
placed outside to prevent vandals
irom entering. The total number
of lives lost was 3D.
"A recent bulletin Issued by the
insurance depjirtment-of tbe cham
ber of commerce of the United
States ssys that fires occur In five
schools on the average every day.
Since attendance at school la com
pulsory by law, lt is eesentlal that
every possible precaution be taken
to insure the safety of tne pupils.
No educational problem Is more
important than the protection ot
