Every angle ot a social situation
that haa become the subject of
bitter argument is portrayed in
"The Mad Whirl," fnlversal-Jewel
all-star production to be shown In
the Majestic Theatre tonight )id

a vehicle pointing any moral, bQ
strictly as a vehicle Interpreting to
vividly portray those accused of
being desciples ot jazz-mania.
But It Is more thsn the evils
possible by reason of auper-lndul-j

the people of the land that are laid

picture deals fteclflclly with the
possible effect on the family rela

DESIRE FOR HOT COFFEE
IN BED MADE HIM INVENT
STOCKHOLM, Oct. 9. (A. P.)
Difficulty in awakening and his
I fondness for a cup of coffee in bed,
were two factors that led Dr. Oua
Itaf Dalen, winner ot the 1912 Nobel
prize, to become a successful In
ventor.
Dr. Dalen as a boy, living In a
humble country home, was re
quired to arise early, but he found
It hard to awaken on time. A dis
carded old wall-clock waa repaired
to which was added an alarm
mechanism with a pier of tlnplate
taking the place of the bell. He
combined the clock-work with a
little friction wheel covered with
emery paper that began to rotate
15 minutes before the alarm went
off. Friction against the rough
surface ot the paper lighted a
match.
The match was attached to a rod
that awung over a Raaoiine lamp,
the cap of which was simultaneous
ly removed by another contrivance
constructed from a couple - of
empty wooden Bpools and a piece
of string. Over the lamp be had
placed a coffee urn containing cof
fee prepared the night before.
When tbe slumbers of the little
Inventor, then 14 yeara of age were
Interrupted by the alarm going oft
I the room waa lighted and hla cot
tee was uoiiiiik.
j It was during Dr. Dalen'a experl
I menta wlih gas accumulators for
. beacon lights that he lost bis sight
I through an explosion. His inventive
i genius, however, did not seem to
suffer as be baa since then given
the world a number of new lnven-
tlons and still continues to direct
' the work of his plant in splto ot bis
blindness.
