OPENING BOXING
CARD PAID ALL BILLS
BUT GAVE NO PROFIT
The opening card under the au
spices of the newly created boxing
commission, although attended by
a crowd of over 600 spectators,
made no profit, according to the
report made by Fromotor C. H.
Clough. The card, however, did
pay all expenses, so that the com
mission Is In the clear, but the pro
moter received nothing for his
time or work. The commission
hopes to build up a small reserve
for the purpose of promoting ath
letics In the city, but the first
match failed to contribute anything
toward Uie reserve fund. The fine
exhibition furnished, however, Is
expected to have a good Influence
on rut ure ranis, so that a better
financial showing will be made
next time.
The Umpqua chiefs met last
evening at the office of A. T.
Lawrence for the purpose of dis
cussing mutters In connection
with their recent trip to the Ore
gon Slate fair. The members
were much elated over their suc
cess and plans are already on
foot to further strengthen tho
organization by the addition of
some good local timber not yet
affiliated with the booster organ
isation. Those who were respons
ible to a great degree for the
plans carried out at tho demon
stration at the fair were highly
commended, the success of the
chiefs being largely due to their
efforts. As a whole the organiza
tion put up a fine demonstration
and the boys are all pepped up
to make the club tho banner or
ganisation of the state. Several
enthusiastic talks were made by
members, all with the view of
adding more strength and prestige
to the club.
