"Aunt Phoebe," as she was known
; by all her friends, was bom in
I Iowa, and would havo been 83
1 years of age on the 18th of next
month. She was one of a family
I of 10 children, her brother, Robert
Troxel, of this city, being the only
surviving member of that family.
In 1S59 her parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Frederick Troxel, cronsed the I
plains, and with them she came to
Oregon, the family taking up
claim on Deer creek, where her
marriage to John Vinson occurred.
Following his death she was mar
ried to Louis Jones, and her mar
riage to Chris Ketchell, now de
ceased was In later years.
She leaves besides her aged
brother, five children, Robert Vin
son of Montana, William Vinson of
Cole Valley, Olive Anderson of
Portland, Jennie Sidmore of Ta
coma, and Mary Fox of Hxker.
Cal. She also leaves three grand
children. For many years Mrs. Ketchell
was employed by Douglaa county,
conducting the county heme, where
the Roaeburg Lumber and Manu
facturing company's mill now
stands. In more recent years ahe
has been residing alone In bar
home on Fowler street.
Arrangements for the funeral
services have not yet been made, i

three genuine rattlers which, until
three years ago, roamed the plnlna

ly after birth. The remaining eight
fed principally upon white mice,
are growing rapidly They meas
ured 12 Inches in length at the sec
ond month, twice that at blr'ib.

small box separate from the glass
case containing the parents and
other members of the snake col
ony. Tho female snake, not being
of the mammal species, could do
little to care for her young after
lilrlh, so Mlas Wiley segregated
them Until they were strong
enough to protect themaelvea from
being crushed by the large ones
milling about the cage.
Small white mica, raised by the
museum, are the only food given
the young while the grown serpents
are denied such luxuries as a regu
lar diet.
Half the students of Barnard
College, Columbia University, last
year consulted the college occupa
tion bureau, maintained for the
placement and guidance of alum
nae nnri students.

the armory Thursday night, ac
cording to a decision made by the

o clock Thursday night and go

viewing of the exhibits and the

Philadelphia was chosen for the
next annual meeting of the Sov
ereign Lodge of the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows by unan
imous vote of the delegates at
the 101st communication of the
order here today. The meeting
win be held the third Monday In
September.
The Sovereign Grand Lodge
voted. 196 to 18. to amend the
constitution to provide that no
representative shall be admitted
to the sovereign, grand - lodge
without having taken the patri
archs militant degree. The amend
ment has been discussed In many
other sessions of the sovereign
grand lodge, but has never be
fore been able to muster the ne
cessary three-fourth majority.

voted down a propoial for estab
lishment of one or more sanitar
iums for treatment of members

Verle Damon Burnett, of Drain,
and Miss Josephine Andrews of
Reedsport, were quietly married at
high noon yesterday by County
Judge George K. Quine. The cere
mony which was performed at the
Judge's office in the court house,
was attended only by immediate
relatives of the contracting parties.
They left at once for Drala. where
Mr. Burnett la engaged In farming,
and where they will make their
futuxe home.

Sophie Poleakl .whose body - was
found todny in the furnace of an
East Side lumberyard kiln, was
placed In the furnace while alive
and burned to death. Medical Ex
aminer Schwartz announced.
Two fractures were found oh the
woman'a skull. George Symuk, fire
man of the rfrnare, was charged
with Mrs. Poleskl's death. j
I Symuk said the woman often
I visited him at the yard and that
she once threatened to poison him.
When she brought him two bottles
,of wine this morning, he suspected
;that she bad placed poison In the
I wine. He said he heat her over
I the head with a bottle and then
'carried her boJy to the furnace
(room. Police said Mrs. Poleskl
I was gauged before being placed in
I the furnace.
