CommntliiK on the Shenandoah
Colonel Mitchell admitted that be
knew but little of the accident, but
said he believed the airship fifty
per cent overweight and may have
been strained as a result of ber en
counter with the storm at Lake-
hurst several months ago.
' H paid tribute to the memory of
'Commander Lansdowne .as a
"splendid man and the last of our
'capable and experienced airship
captains."
"The Shenandoah was going
west on a propaganda mission for
i the navy to offset adverse publi
city caused by the failure In the
! Pacific, Arctic, and propaganda
(and rot real service was the key
note In the undertakings."
Claiming thnt the air route
t aprons the Pacific via Alaska Is a
! short one and any nation can reach
'this country by that route, Colonel
Mitchell thrust at naval officers,
who believed that "no nation can
reach this one across these
oceans."
He deplored that the weather
bulletins were not available to air
men, although Issued for the "ben
efit of onions and cabbage."

nel Mitchell declared that the

economy or mal-admlnlstratlnn had
been the cause of loss of life on the
111 fated airship.
Colonel Mitchell spent all of
Friday. Friday nlfht and half of
a dav Snturday preparing the state
ment. He revised and rewrote it
a number of times before releas
ing It. Th statement contains
about fi.000 words and closes with
this paragraph:
"The bodies of former compan
ions nnd buddies moulder under
the soil tn America. Asia. Europe
nnd Africa, many, yes many, sent
there directly bv official stitnldltv.
We all make mistakes, but the
criminal mistakes made by armies
nnd navies whenever they have
be-n allowed to handle aeronau
tics Phow their Incompetence. We
would not be keeping our trust
Tith our departed comrades were
we to longer conceal these facts.
"I owe the government every
thing the government owes me
nothing. As a patriotic American
citizen, t can stand bv no longer

ments at the expense of the lives
of our people and the delusion of
the American public."
