A. C. Hrown, who has a well
kept ranch eust of tfutlierlln hits
been experimenting with vurioti
crops the past several yenrs with
a view of producing something
out of tho ordinary crop line in
this section and for which there
is a good demuud, says the Sutli
erlin Sun. Two years ago he pro.
duced a flue crop of egg plant,
and he hus experimented with
several other crops new to this
locality with more or lots suc
cess. Last spring Mr. Hrown planted
two acres of peppermint. His
neighbors smiled and frequently
mentioned something about m;nt
Julep. but Mr. Hrown. like a Kord
car, kept pegging right along cul
tivating his crop and saying noth
ing. On Wednesday of last week Mr.
Brown cut a quurter acre of bis
peppermint crop and the follow
ing duy loaded it on a truck and
took It to Eugene where It was
processed in a still. This process
required about two hours time, at
the end of which over twenty
pounds of essence had been se
cured from the truck load of
peppermint. A test of the ex
tract proved It to be of the high
est grade, and Mr. ltrowu was
paid $11.50 a pound for the pro
duct, returning to Sutherlin with
a check of $234.
During the present week Frank
Thompson has taken two truck
loads of Mr. Hrown's peppermint
to the Eugene still. From one of
these loads 21 pouuds of pepper
mint essence was extracted, for
which Mr. Hrown received $241.
50. Tho other load which wns
small, yielded 12 pounds of es
sence, for which a check for $138
was received.
Since the returns from Mr.
Hrown's peppermint crop became
known, none of his neighbors huv
said a word about mint Julep:
but on the other hand practically
every ninchcr In his neighborhood
is planning to grow several ceres
of peppermint "next season. Mr.
Hrown Is arranging to Install a
still on his rnnch for pepper
mint extract only and next sea
son will plant about ten acres
of the crop. Experts at Salem
stated that the peppermint grown
oti Mr. Hrown's ranch is of a su
perior grade to that produced in
several localities In the Willam
ette valley, and are of the opin
ion that the crop can be grown
here with great success and much
profit to growers.
Mr. Hrown believes he will
realize about $18110 from his two
acres of peppermint.

THE HEART OF THE COLONEL
When I susRPsted to Col. Beldon
to tell the truth and see what
would iiHPpen. he seemed to take It
that I was not talking of the tn
votitlKatlon that would be called,
but (hat I was intimating that he
never told the truth.
"I didn't expect that from you.
Cleo," he said.
"You don't understand me. Col
onel," 1 answered him. "You know
rs '.rell as I thirt In an Investiga
tion of this kind as much as possi
ble of the Hffalr Is hushed up. You
army officers say to yourselves:
'Ttie man Is dead. Let's .make It
as easy for him as possible.' You
must remember, however, that In
l his case both Rita and myself will
be called upon to testify, it you
ti ll the truth."
"Thm I shall He like a gentle
man. I certainly shall keep both
you and Rita out of It If possible.
Come on, Cleo, let's bo over to the
hospital and find out If possible
where Rita Is, 'At least she must
he Informed of her husband's
death."
"Don't you think. Colonel, It will
be better for me to get Rita's ad-dt-i
Ht- fiim Mr. Aciums aud t.ik te
her over the long distance 'pnone
myself. I'm not sure that you
should have anything to do with
It. We want to keep your two
names from being connected If It
can be done."
Then the Colonel broke down.
"Cleo, can't you see I must talk
to Hlta? I have found since she
has bcrn away how much I love
her. 1 do not think I could bear
my life In the coming years with
out her. She is now free, and I
want her I want her. No other
woman has come Into my life who
has filled It with the Joy that Rita
has. Her frc-h, modern viewpoint
which Is much the ssme as yours
has been something that has al
ways taken me out nf myself. I
will tell you frankly, Cleo, that
I'm clad Thorndike Is dead. I've
always felt that I was standing un
der a sword that might drop on me
at one moment while he was alive.
You know he has blackmailed me
more or less ever since he was
married.
"He knew that I loved Rita. Per
haps she will tell me now that she
card's for me. for although she hat
ed and feared her huhand, and al
though she told me that I was the
only person In all her life that had
ever been good to her, she would
never tell me that she loved me.
"I know that I am much older
than she, but I also know that she
has hnd such an experience with a
younger man that I am sure If she
intends to marry anyone It will be
someone who Is settled In life.
"I've been selfish with her, but a
mans Is always selfish with the wo
man that he loves. There have
been many times when 1 let her
rest under the odium of malicious
minslp rather than tell her that I
was not going to call on her so
often
"I couldn't stay away from her,
Cleo. My little dally call at her
house was th one thing that mad
my monotoaoua life In the army
post bearable. She was always so
bright: even when I knew she was
unhappy aba cheered me up.
"When you came I was In hopes
you two girl would be good
friends, and I waa glad to see that
you took to each other rlghtaway.
Then, Just as be waa beginning to
be a little happier, ahe received
that letter from her husband, and
well you know the rest."
Honestly, dear diary. I frit sorry
for that man. - He. had been very
aelftsh, sometimes almost criminal
ly so, but he was so unhappy at
that moment. 1 was sure he had
told me all this ao that I would tell
It to Rita something I had no in
tention of doing. If he could not
talk to her himself, he was trying
to get someone else to he his a
vocate.
"You go to your dinner, Col
onel," I said, "and be oareful not
to tell my mother-in-law more than
you can help. I'm not th leaat bit
hungryI'm too excited to ate. I'll
go over to the hospital and see
Chick and take his advice about
communicating wlla Rita."
I could (eel Mrs. Ralston's eye
upon me from behind hr curtain
as I walked past the house ta the
hospital, aid I knew that eh bad
not gone down to the mess to din
ner because she waited to aee
when Cot. Beldon would leave my
house.
"Poor thing, she's starving to
death," I said to myself, sarcastic
ally, and I was more than ever de
termined that nothing could keep
me at the post after my father bad
gone home.
Upon request I was ushered right
up to Chick's room. I found him
just eatlag hia dinner. He waa
looking fine, although a little pale.
He had not heard a word of the
happenings of the afternoon, and
when I told him about them be was
greatly upset. Ke lost all aight of
what really did happen because he
rould not see anything except that
I had been near death.
'Are there any more cra-y men
around this dump?" he exclaimed.
Because if there are Paul and 1
will get out of bed thla afternoon
and take you away pronto."
Finally I got him back to where
he could consider what was to be
done about Rita.
