COMMUNITY STANDARDS.
It seems a desirable thing; to have a home in some fine
city or neighborhood, but if people want that sense of pride,
they must conform to higher standards than ordinary ones.
These things are not accomplished without money and effort.
'. The people on a certain street may rather enjoy the
' easy going habits of that neighborhood. The feeling prevails
t ' that "anything goes." So if a man's grounds are neglected,
; he can satisfy himself with the thought that it is a plain
neighborhood, where people do just as they like. But if he
; wants to sell a home on that street, the slack standards pre
vent his getting a good price.
In a fine neighborhood, a family will feci, if some part
i ; of their property is not up to the habits of the street, that
; that condition of things can not be allowed to continue. So
. they improve it in that respect, and the example incites some
t one else to improve something that was getting shabby. So
't standards are maintained and improved right along, and the
' neighborhood becomes more and more choice.
J , If people want their community to go ahead, they must
I look at their own civic features with a somewhat critical eye.
; The spirit of mere knocking and fault finding wiii do no
; good, but if some feature of their community is below what
.' that town ought to have, it is of no use to overlook that sit-
' uation and let the matter drift. Influential people should
take a stand and insist that something better must be done,
; and the whole population should agree that such a condition
is below standard, and must be remedied. We have main
; tained thesq high standards in the main in Koseburg, but
- , there are conditions here which we all know, which are be-
low the ideals we entertain for our home town, and which
; should be improved.
o . .
It seems to be as good as settled that Tom Murray, the
'. notorious Oregon convict, will plead insanity in an effort to
I'- save himself from the gallows for his part in the recent mur
; derous outbreak. It also seems to be as good as settled that
I ' vuch a plea will not save him. Governor Pierce has already
: declared that Murray need not expect clemency and that he
-; will hang. The public will naturally accept the governor's
; ."Word and look forward to the time when Murray will do a
jig on air. The convict unknowingly spoke with prophecy
when he remarked upon his capture at .Centralia, Wash., that'
"the jig is up." Kelly and Willos, fellow murderers of Mur
ray in intent if not in fact will attempt to cheat the noose
by the assertion that they did not actually participate in the
.' killing of Guards Holman and Sweeney. Their quoted
statements since their recapture show that they are trying
to create a belief in their absolute innocence, and so far they
hnve claimed most everything possible in their behalf except
r that the two dead guards committed suicide. They may suc
ceed in establishing even that supposition if they are tried
by the type of jurors that of late years have been making a
- mockery of justice throughout the country.

"EJarkct and property worth approximately $10,000,000 were

Vunc 30, it was announced this week by the treasury depart
jnCnt. During the period 6,000 liquor law violators fell into
-the clutches of the prohibition agents and 10 of the officers
were killed in the performance of their duties. . This is cer
tainly "reporting progress." It is likewise an eloquent re
futation of the oft-heard assertion that the prohibition law
c'uri not bo enforced. True, the job isn't finished, but I'ncle
Sam has never started a job that he failed to finish, and it's
a safe prediction, judging from the aggressive campaign he
lias outlined, that he will not fall down on this one.
o
After a lapse of seven years since the close of the
- World war, the United States is preparing to resume speak
ing terms with Germany. Schools all over the country are
gradually establishing or restoring the Gernian language in
their course of studies. This is a sure sign that the racial
. hatred engendered by the war is disappearing and that none
of it will be transmitted to the coming generation of citizens.
Germany, as a republic, is receiving from this country con
kideration to a degree that she could never have gained as
in arrogant monarchy.

WASHINGTON. Aug. 27. A
complete resume of the flying
operation! of the navy airplanes
with the MacMillan Arctic expe
dition was received here today
from Lieutenant Commander Hyrd
by radio In response to a request
from the National Geographic So
ciety. . The dispatch 6hows that
the three planes flew an aggre
gate of 6,006 mites and taw an
area nearly as large as the state
of Maine. Only one forced land
ing was necessary during all the
flights.
The dispatch follows:
"My records show that the
planes have a total of 75 hour
and 50 minutes flying time, which
at SO miles per hour equals 6006
miles total flown by NA-1 away
from Etah, ar06 miles; by NA-3,
1713 miles; by NA-K. 1073 miles.
"Total miles flown away from
Etah by three planes on work
accomplished flight mission 5292
miles.
"The only forced landing oc
curred at these flights. The NA-3
was forced down on the way to
Igloo Dnhoitni, a half mile from
Etah harbor. Approximately 30.
000 square miles was seen from
the planes on these flight. Of
course many of the flights were
made over the same course south
and southeast of Hay Hiord, ex
tending for at least 70 miles.
"These aye mountain ranges
and mountain peaks, ome reach
an altitude of at least 7500. feet
and mostly covered with snow,
except a few comparatively low
ranges near Hay Fiord.
, "These mountain ranges do not
show on any charts 1 have seen.
Mountain ranges lie nearly all
the way from Sawyer Hay to Can
non Fford and it is thought that
most of this region Is unexplored
hv whito men. No mountains are
shown on charts in a direction
315 degrees from Sawyer Hay, but
there are mountains in that re
gion that extend at least 25 miles.
"There is a lake about 2 miles
long, froren over in the mountain
between Sawyer Hay and Cannon
Fiord, about 200 miles from the
northwest end of Sawyer Hay.
"The Greenland Ice cap reaches
an altitude of at least lo.oon
feet in a direction 100 degrees
from Robertson Hay.
"It is thought that little has
been known heretofore of ice
conditions around Kllesmere Is
land in the summer period. Nearly
all of the many fiord seen by
its' show them to be filled with
Ice which occasionally opens np
but soon closes in again. Hay
Flnrd nnd Eureka sound east of
Axel Heiherg Island are filled
with drifting Ice.
"The land In Ellemere Island
is firm, but too rugged to afford
a landing place.
"In all the territory flown over
the Greenland Ice cap a compara
tively warm stratum of air was
experienced at 7.000 feet and a
bitterly cold one at 11,00 feet.
