"Shoot To Kill on Sight" Order.
SALEM, Ore., Aug. 13. Some
125 possemen are this morning
combing the swampy country in
the vicinity of Pratum, eight
miles east of Salem, for some
trace of the three convicts who
Inst night made their escape from
the Oregon penitentiary after
killing two guards and seriously
wounding another.
The men were last seen enter
ing the brushy swamp along Pud
ding river, two miles east of Pra-
by tho taxi driver ana nis
passenger whom the fugitives
forced to drive them that far.
One of the trio Is thought to be
seriously wounded and all are
heavily armed. Farmers through
out the entire section have been
warned and are joining the search.
The poshes are under the gen
eral direction of Deputy Warden
Lilley and Major Tom Rilyea of
the nntlonal guard. All have
been Instructed to shoot to kill
anv of the three on signi.
Officers are confident that tne
men are still In the vicinity, ar
guing that Murray Is apparently
In no condition to travel ana mat
his companions would probably
he loath to desert their leader so
early In the chase.

Fugitive Hide Till Night.
SALFM. Ore., Aur. 13. Pri
son authorities looking hack over
the previous attempt of Murray
and Kelly to escape this after
noon expressed the opinion that
the fugitives would likely adopt
the same tactics they used upon
the former occasion lie In bid
ing during daylight and travel at j
night, also doing their foraging
for food under the cover of dark
ness by robbing country stores or
raiding farm houses. According
to these calculations the convicts
are not yet sufficiently hungry
to risk showing themselves, but
will likely do so as soon as It
becomes dark enough for them
to travel safely -tonight.
The officers are also Inclined
to give credence to the argument
that It Is entirely likely thai tne
three will work their way south
ward toward Aumsvllle, a distance
of nine or ten miles, the scene or
their former hide and seek game
with the posses.
From Aumsvllle south tnrougn
the Marlon county to Jefferson
the country Is all familiar to Mur
ray, who evaded the ottirers tor
a Vull week In that section. An
other theory being considered Is
that the men will renialn close
to their present hiding place for
several days until tho enthusiasm
of the searchers has waned and
their vigilance relaxed and tnen
steal another automobile and
make a night attempt to get out
of the country entirely. All of
the officers are agreed that the
situation is a potential duplica
tion of the Tracy-Merrill rampage
of 1902, and that Murray, at
least. Is as dangerous as either
Tracy or Merrill. Warnings are
