In her letter to Mr. Coler, Mrs.
St. John wrote:
"I cannot believe that Mr,
ltrowning Is a fit guardian, and
now this disgusting farce of
adopting that young woman.

claimed when adopted or 17 as

recommendations had been made
to Mr. Ilrowning, the commis
sioner said, but he declined to
stute whether they included giv
ing up Mary.
Mr. Coler is commissioner of
the department of public we if ure,
who has oeen conducting an In
vestigation into the circumstances
surrounding her adoption, de
scribing it as 'the most unmoral
thing" he had ever encountered,
The girl and Browning had plan
ned to leave today on a week
end auto trip, but this was can
celled following the discovery o(
the girl's act.
