The fire department was called
upon at noon today to combat a
stubborn fire at the -Oxford Rooms
on Stephens street. The blaze ap
parently started on the roof, the
cause being luid to embers flying
from tho Hose Investment Com
pany hotel nearby, where a fire
was started this morning to dis
pose of rubbish. The flumes crept
Into the attic, and burned along
the ridge pole, eullng Into the par
titions and sldewalls, where It was
difficult to reach. Following its
usual policy of endeavoring to
eliminate water damage as far as
possible, the fire department tried
to extinguish the blaze with nhem-

' not hold It, so that it was necessary
