Officer Vaughn Claims He
Shadowed Man to Rear ,
of Reed's Home and In
terfered With Sale.
Col Reed was today fined $200 In
the city court following his convlc1
tlon on charges of possessing and
selling Intoxicating liquor. Reed
was arrested Saturday evening by,
Officer Vaughn, and appeared for i
trial before City Recorder Whipple!
this afternoon, following his plea of :
not guilty.
According to the officer he I
shadowed a man who dodged off j
Mother street Into the blind street '
running parallel to the highway.
This man, he stales, went to a
small garage In the rear of Reed's
residence, and the officer says he
heard money change hands and
heard the clink of bottles. He grab
bed the unknown man and heard
Rued Hllpplng back into the shed,
so released the stranger a moment
to go after Reed. The smaller man
however, broke and ran, throwing
down two bottles of liquor, which
the officer obtained for evidence.
Upon being searched Reed bad
$ti.50 upon his person.
Reed claims that he was ap
proached late In the evening by
two men who claimed to be from
Portland, and who offeed to sell
him four gallons of moonshine.
Reed says he told them that he was
not dealing In liquor, but that he
would like to buy a gallon for his
own use, but that he would demand
a sample of it first The men, he
said, agreed to bring back a sam
ple, and did return after midnight.
As his family object to him drink
ing since a recent paralytic stroke,
he told the men, according to his
story, to go around the house. The
bottle had Just been opened for a
sample drink when the officer but
ted into the scene. Reed denied
possession or sale, and claims he
was merely buying a small quan
tity for his own use. He took the
officer to task for letting the other
man get away.
After hearing the statement of
the officer and of Mr. Reed, Re
corder Whipple returned a verdict
of guilty and Imposed fines of f 100
on each of the two counts.
Reed has previously been convict
ed for violations of' the liquor laws,
and only a few months ago was
confined for a violation of the law.
He was pardoned by Governor
Pierce because of 111 health.

THAN LAST YEAR
Wheat production forecasts from
17 countries received by the United
States department of agriculture
up to July 28 give a total of 2.109.
I 000.0UU bushels against 2,065.000,000
I bushels from the same countries
' last year. These countries nor
i mallv produce more than three-
rourtos or the world s wheat crop
outto.de of Russia.
Data are still lacking for some of
the important producers of the
northern hemisphere including
Krance, Germany, Jugoslavia and
Russia. In these countries, the lat
est reports show a condition above
average and better than at the
same time last year. The crop,
however, Is not yet made and there
is still a chance for unfavorable
weather conditions to adversely af
fect the final out-turn.
Recent advices from Canada re
port rapid deterioration of the crop
' In the province of Alberta due to
dry winds. Home darrlage has oc
t curred In Saskatchewan but condl-
tlons there are more favorable than
In Alberta.
Mill stocks In the Danube Rasln
j are reported to be low and the mill
ing uemami ior oiu wneai nas in
creased according to a report from
United States Agricultural Com
missioner Haas at Vienna. Harvest
ing has been somewhat delayed by
wet weather and it seems likely
that the new wheat will arrive on
the market later than expected.
Recent increases are reported in
purchases of Argentine and Ameri
can wheats.
The wheat crop of Hungary Is
now forecast at 63.199,000 bushels
compared with 51.56S.000 bushels
harvested last year according to a
cablegram received by the United
States department of agriculture
from the International Institute of
agriculture at Rome. Rye produc
tion Is placed at 29.1 .12.000 bushels
ajrainst 22.103,000 bushels produc
ed last year; barley 21. 127.0(H)
bushels against 14,712.000 bushels;
oats 22.046,000 bushels against 15.
13.000 bushels. No forecasts are
yet available for the other crops
but . condition reports including
corn, potatoes, sugar beets, forage
crops, etc., are all above average.
