An Expensive Machine
Industry, after uncounted centur
ies of groping, is turning away
from man as a unit ot power He b
too expensive. Kveu at the height
of Roman conquest, w lu n slaves
were as cheap as tdiecp, man power
was costly.
As a unit of wer man is "an ex
travagance, whether considered In

as efficient in power as a horse,
and about four times as expensive
in upkeep.
A hard worked horse can do
heavy work on an expenditure of
about 25 centi a day for food, but
a man requires four times that sum,
and his food must be specially pre
pared. The horse can go from
dawn till dark and then sleep on
straw, but a man must have his
short day and a good bt,d at night.
Kven the horse, however, has
gone into the discard as a source
of industrial power. Although we
still speak of engines with a certain
amount of horsepower, it is rn-r
ly for convenience in terminology.

Feed the Baby Salmon
Fis he ry ex; ert s w ho h a ve ex
amined the big salmon caught in
i lie hwer river flii season have
determine d that the 5 pounder was
a five year old, and that a number
of others weighing about SO
pounds each were of a similar age.
The unusually large number of big
ti-h caught this year is attributed
to the fact that a few years ago a
considerable numbi'r of young fry
were kepi at lhe hatcheries and fed
for several weeks after they had
reached the period of development
tit which it was customary to turn
them litoso. The sat mon has a
han I struggle fur existence from
the time it leaves the hatchery un
til it reaches the cannery, but like
the human baby. It Is the first few
weeks that are the hardest, and it
is then that the'deatb rate la the
highest. For this reason it is pos
sible that it may be worth while to
feed U of the youngsters a while
before turning them loose.
If a few weeks' extra care at the
hatcheries gives the young salmon
such a good start in life that he be
comes an eighty pounder in five
years, it might be profitable to
make this method the rule instead
of the exception. Several ears of
experience has demonstrated thaj
the hatcheries if properly handled
can b- dept ruled on to perpetuate
the industry and It is possible that
we may yet succeed in producing'
regular runs of hatchery fi.-li that
will show much greater weight
that t ti i resent average. It should
not he forgotten however, that poli
tics and pollution are both threat
ening the imlusiry. Pollution of the
