ging is at 60 per cent and lumber-'
ing at 85 per cent of capacity.
Portland Logging wong the
Columbia river and In adjacent
districts Is at 60 per cent of capaci
ty. Seventy-two out of a total of
121 sides, including both mill and
independent operations, are. run
ning. Six Portland sawmills are
down. Three of these have been
down for periods varying from two
months to over a year, two are
clotted for repairs and one for re
building because of fire. There are
plenty of ' jobs on employment
boards here to care for all men in
this city who want work. The Na
tron Cut-off continues ' to require
many replacements and several
hundred fire fighters were hired
for nearby districts during the
week.
Haymond, Wash. All sawmills
on W II In pa Harbar except the Hart
Wtood are operating. The ..entnh
river camps have resumed logging
but logging operations on the Mil
waukee are still down. There Is a
slight surplus ot common labor on
Willapa Harbor.
Aberdeen-Hoqulam Logging
In Grays Harbor district Is now 65
per cent of capacity. Thirty-two
operations with a total ot 52 sides
are opt-rat Ing and are employing a
total ot 3600 men. All sawmills In
this district are cutting; six Aber
deen and Hoqutam plants are op
erating two shifts and one Is-running
three shifts. Ha II road main
tenance, highway work, and city
construction and building continue
active. There are but few jobs be
ing offered hero and there are but
few men seeking work.
Tacoma With 44 out of a total
of 73 sides operating, logging In
the Tacoma district Is at present
55 per cent cf capacity. Lumber
production Is close to 100 per cent
ot one-shift capacity In this city
and most of the outside mills are
sawing. There Is almost no sur
p.us ot common labor here and a
scarcity of some kinds ot Bkilled
help Was noted last week.
Seattle Logging In the Fuget
Sound districts Is 65 per cent of
capacity apd close to 4000 men are
at work in the camps, not includ
ing more thati 8ot who are employ
ed In truck logging. Fractlcnlly a 1
sawmills In Seattle, Kverett, HeHl
ingham and nearby towns ant op
erating. There are few unemploy
ed in Seattle. The wheat haivtst
in, the Inland Empire has called
many men from this district and
the migration continues.
Spokane A continued shortage
of labor was noted In Spokane last
week. Moie than 1500 Inen are
righting forest fires and dfmands
fur help from farmers have in
creased. JUilroads have many
crews doing track maintenance
work. Them are calls for miners
fiom the Wallace districts. The
Vintou Lumber company is oper
ating eight camps and practically
a woods operations in the Inland
Empire either are running or are
fighting fire. Experienced woods
help Is extremely scarce. All large
sawmills are cutting. The Ji lack
well, Coeur d'Alene, wj.l add a
