VIENNA. July 24. A decree
Issued by the late Kmperor Fran- ,
els Jceph 14 years ago, recently
was vacated and tho act which
caused the Issuance of'the decree
Immediately was repeated by the
one punished by it. The victim
or the aged emperor's wrnth was
"Multly," the female elephant,
horn at Schoenbrunn Zoological
Ganletis In Vienna, June 17, ll)ert.
When about five years old
"Muldy" was being admired one
day by a party which Included a
lMily-in-wuiilng at tho royal Court.
Filling her trunk from the great
concrete tank which had been
provided for her, "Madly" blew
the water straight Into the race
of Ihn ludy-ln-waitlng. When the
Kmperor heard of Ihe misbehavior
he ordered the elephant's tank
covered and condemned "Vnldv"
to go without a bath for the r-.
malnder of her life.
It happened that the nineteenth,
anniversary of the elephant's
birth last month was a warm day
and thofe now In charge of affairs
in Austria, figuring that no dan- .
ger could come from vacating the
late emperor's decree, restored
"Maldy's" bathing tank. The M
beast plainly showed her delight
with her first plunge In 14 years'.
That plunge apparently recalled
her last previous one and "Maldy,"
perhaps thinking It part of the
program as before, immediately
filled her trunk with water and
then emptied It Into the faces of
the purk Inspector and halt a
doxen of his friends who had as
sembled to watch her get reac
liiainled with the tank. 'This
lime, however, the offense' was)
overlooked. ,
