sons were killed by lightning in
metropolitan New York and south
New Jersey yesterday. CropB of
tobacco, hay and grain were flat
tened by a severe rainstorm in
New England and upstate New
York.
A 14-year-old boy was killed by
lightning in llrookiyn when he at
tempted to climb a tree to dislodge
a kite. A woman was killed at her
sewing machine in Somers Point,
N. J. A laborer was killed under
a tree at the Slwanoy golf club and
la soldier killed while on duty at
Fort Slocum.
There were no fataltles In New
England, but the storm late yes
terday swept down barns, flooded
streets and cellars and washed out
railroad tracks. Trolley service
and wire communication wore Impeded.

EUOKNK, Ore., July 23. All
bids for the construction of the
McKenile river pipe line, entailing
a new water sdpply for Kugene,
.were rejected at a meeting of the
water board last evening. Justice
to bidders who expressed a wish
to enter new bids was given as the
cause. It was also said that lower
bids would in all probability be re
ceived when new bids are called.
The estimated cost of the work is
$375,000.
Nine bidders entered the field.
Elimination of bids on all but steel
pre-; pipe line will be affected when the
new bids are called for.

largest single purchase of land In
Jackson county was recorded late
yesterday when 3.30 acres, involv
ing Ihr.-e fruit orchards and four
ranches was purchased by a syn
dicate of l4 Angeles men from
the Pacific Mutual Insurance com
pany of Saq Francisco. The pur
chase price was not announcd,
but according to a report by the
purchasers, the properties are as
sessed at ' approximately half a
million dollars. The new owners
plan to operate the ranches and
orchards, raise stock, and will
