I COMMENT t
"ROSrEBUR570'RE5"ON, irfONDASO'OIVOO, 1925.
LOS ANGELES FIGHTS LIES.
Rare indeed is the American who has not laughed at
some good natured jest based on boosting; in Los Angeles.
The Shriners during convention week found fun in the rain
which they branded as "most unusual," and it was for that
period. Like mischievous boys they went fishing in the
streets, they paraded in bathing suits and sang "Look For
the Silver Lining." They were jolly men at play and not
one of them would willingly have exchanged those conditions
of weather for the merciless heat that was killing hundreds
in the East that same week and that was causing millions to
suffer, remarks the Sunset Magazine.
Making sport of southern California's fondness of itself
is a national pastime yet back of most of the jesting there is
generally real admiration for the zeal with which that sec
tion advances its claims. There is recognition of the fact that
practical ideas are combined with perpetual optimism. The
latest demonstration of sound business judgment there is the
raising of a $1,000,000 fund which will be devoted to com
munity advertising during the 1925-26 fiscal year.
Part of this sum will be used for combating the false
impressions made in the East and Middle West by the exag
gerated reports of the hoof and mouth disease, the drought
-of 1924 and the "black plague" scare. Because some one in
the foreign quarter died of a mysterious ailment and because
proper precautions were taken to guard against a possible
disease epidemic the wildest stories were told and soon
" anxious relatives east of the Rockies began writing to those
. in Los Angeles urging tfiem to stay indoors to avoid the aw
ful scourge. It is an actual fact that parents in the East and
Middle West arranged to ship bottles of water to their chil
dren in Los Angeles, believing that they were in danger of
dying of thirst. Yet it Jias one of the finest municipal water
systems in the world. And it was impossible to dispel the
fear that human beings were apt to die oy the thousands
from the hoof and mouth disease. The Florida boom un
questionably was aided by the slanders against southern Cal
ifornia. All the West suffers some when such an important
section is libeled, so it behooves all the West to help combat
this iniquitous propaganda that is partly inspired by jeal
ousy east of the Rockies.
From Vancouver to San Diego there are numerous sec
tions that ofTcr health, opportunity and enjoyable living con
ditions so it should be the policy of all these sections to co
operate first to bring homeseekers this way, leaving it to
their judgment to select the location that particularly ap
peas to them. When tens of thousands are frightened away
from one section of the West by falsehoods they are apt to
turn to another direction entirely as the Florida excitement
proves.
o
Kobert Harvey, a paroled convict, who has been living
at Omaha, Nebraska, was taken into custody Saturday for
masquerading as a girl in love letters written to bachelors
who were bent on "picking up" something out of the ordin
ary through a mail order correspondence. The "girl" had
upwards of a thousand dollars in his jeans when the officers
searched his wearing apparel. He had victimized several
Oregon "prospects" for good, healtny sums promising each
great returns for the investment. Funny, isn't it, witi so
many charming and good looking girls in this old state
rarin' to enter the matrimonial arena that a fellow would
have the audacity to ferret out something away back in Ne
braska by way of mail correspondence to meet his require
ments? The old adage Hint a fool is born every minute still
holds good in this modern age of living.
o
We hoe the evolution "investigation" now being car
ried on at Dayton will once" and forever settle the question
of the origin of man. From our viewpoint we stand firm on
the Word of God, but some of His subjects sure went hay
wire wicn they "grew up" and this includes a goodly num
ber of the rib species. Looks like the monkey family comes
into evidence in tlic later years of life, rather than at the
beginning.
o
The Boy Scouts are ready for their annual vacation and
will leave tomorrow for a few weeks' camp life at a delight
ful spot on Little river. This is an event of much import
ance to the youngsters and many a father and mother will
be relieved of a lot of surplus energy that formerly permeat
ed the atmosphere around the family domicile. We predict
a lively, interesting and invigorating session.

Came anl Game Warricna.
Game In fins, feathers or fur In
the state of Oreiton belongs to
the people of Oregon and to no
one else. Kvery citizen of the
state ban an etial share in it. A
stale official has no larger prop
erty right In it than has a boot
black or ditch digger.
A warden, In pluln old Kngllh.
la a guard. The law supposes
that a game warden will protect
and administer Ihe game of the
state In such a way that every
citizen may have his just and due
share, which In the state of Ore
gon is In reality an Item of no
small value. If the Intent or this
aot is carried out honestly, a man
Is appointed as game warden who
knows well how to administer and
protect ftamo, and who will do
a well as he knows.
Therefore In finding a game
warden the officials of any stale
are In duly hound to find a man
who knows his business and is
capable and honest enough to do
It well. That 4hB man belongs
to the political parly to whlrh the
governor belongs, or that he Is a
very good personal friend of the
governor or his intimate friend,
has nothing to, do with the raso.
Will the wner of a great shoe
factory make a man manager of
the works Just because he Is of
the right political faith, regard
less of whether or not he knows
the shoe business?
The gsme department of the
state of Oregon has been for a
long tim' the seat of a political
feud. Whatever unwisdom or
worse there may have been In the
administration of the office seems
not to be the great point at Issue.
Political nlrinis rather than game
seem to be the bone of contention.
There is however a substantial
charge against the recent head of
that department, which is that he
was operating on his own account
a commercial fish preserve. This
mav have been done altogether
within the law: hut It was at best
an act of doubtful wisdom. The
hired manager of a large shoe
factory who runs a smHll shoe
factory for his own use and he-
hoof, runs open eyed Into public
suspicion. If the Income from a
state oTfice is not sufficient to re
munerate the official for his liihor
he should not accept tin office.
Particularly In offices of public
trust one should avoid the very
appearance of evil.
Whatever Is dono from this day
forth In Ihe of flee of game warden
of Oregon, let It never 1m forgot
ten that the game of Oregon bo
longs by rights to all the people
of the state, and that Ihe warden's
business Is to guard and conserve
