ROSEBURG, OREGON, THURSDAY, JULY 9, 1925.
RECOVERING OUR LOSSES
--. wonderful display of American courage is being given
at Santa Barbara, following the terrible earthquake which
reduced so many of its fine buildings to ruins. If our peo
ple St ere like those of some nations, we would see in such
a ca$e the people sitting around and bewailing their lot, but
makjng no move to recover their losses. The American peo
ple jre of a different breed. No sooner were all those build
ing ruined, than work began clearing the same up, and
plans began to be formulated for reconstruction. Much the
sarn spirit has been shown in many cities after big fires.
It would seem natural enough for people to be 'dazed for a
litthj by such a sudden calamity, and to want a little time
to recover their normal balance and make a start from a
liev point of view. But there is Santa Barbara the people
tiavf given a very fine illustration of their superb capacitj
to rebound from trouble. They have spent no time in use
lessrrepinJng, but at once begin to pick up the pieces, and
prepare for the vast work of repair and restoration that has
to e done. This is a spirit that enables people to get the
verj? best out of their experiences, and every time they are
knocking down, they go to greater power of accomplishment.
Oncan feel the utmost confidence in the recovery of a city
like this haunt of beauty on the Pacific shore. Cities are
almest never laid out with full appreciation of their future
needs.. Charming as Santa Barbara was, its preseht day
people can do doubt see how they can make it still finer, and
canealize their dreams of what a city beautiful can be. j
fevvyears, and Santa Barbara will be reconstructed accord
ingto the most ideal plans that human taste can devise and
it v311 be more than ever a magnet for tourists.

I ZA warning has been issued in certain localities against
trlajge number of counterfeit $5, ?10, and $20 bills recent
ptiMnto circulation. It soenis alarming when such frai
are-tnade known, and many citizens will no doubt fear they
wilfgct "stuck" with one or more of those bills. Yet wJicn
yoiCconsider how many bills we all handle in the course ol
jCySar, and how few of them ever prove bad, it can be seen
tha the process of manufacturing money is guarded with
gregt; skill. Also the genuine money has been so skilfully
engraved, that it is a very delicate and difficult job to imi
tate it. Also credit must be given to the bankers who art
very alert and keen in finding fake Monty, p'he crooks vi
contemplate this form of fraud should Realize that it is a
very difficult one to put over. They stand an excellent
chance of getting into trouble if they monkey with Uncle
Sam's green and yellow backs.

- -A philanthropic society recently reported that a certain

tbeCcasc, and discovered the reasons why the boy was (lis
coidefjted. As a result of this tactful attention, efforts arc

reported of runaway boys. They nro commonly laid tt
