the three inalienable rights of mankind is the pursuit f drink down town.
happiness. But the treasurer of tho Atlantic Monthly, in
a recent address, remarked that the American people are
not a happy nation, because they overlook the greatest
sources of happiness. He thought that even the peasants of
Europe beat us in securing happiness. He suggested as one
of the ways through which one can seek happines, a knowl
edge of books, through which one gains a higher wisdom
and broader conception of human experience. There is no
doubt a great deal in a philosophy like that. The general
popular impression is that happiness is to be had by obtain
ing money. But there is not much to make one think that
people who have wealth have ny more than their share of
happiness. They are freed from the anxieties carried by
those who suffer from poverty. Yet there nre many people
in very humble circumstances who have little money and
perhaps none at all, who somehow have arrived ut' that
secret of obtaining happiness, which so many people of
wealth have seemingly missed. The trouble with money as
the creator of happines is that people commonly tire of the
tilings that money will buy. They may think that they
would be happier if they dwelt in a larger and finer housei
but if they get money and are able to have it, they may not

upon by tlie president of the New York State Bankers asso
ciation at their recent convention. He thought it was time
to discourage spending for unnecessary articles and luxur
ies. It is the business of the banker to discern that invis
ible line where reasonable confidence in one's future be-
comes extravagance and lack of thrift. He is trained to
make that distinction, and if he advises you to wait until
you have saved more money before you make this or that i
expenditure, it is well to accept his counsel.

Some folks hava a mania for writing their names in ;
places of public resort. They should note that steps are
being taken at Gettysburg national park, against those who i
deface the tablets at that historic spot, by writing their
names on them. Many sacred spots, shrines of history or
natural beauty, have lieen marred by the people who insist j
on writing their autographs in such spots. It seems to des-,
