Indiana Had Effective
Method of Fire Making
The most widespread method of
making tire practiced by the Amer
ican uhorlKlnes nt the time of the
discovery of America by Columbus
was by reciprocntnry motion f
wood and igniting the ground-off
particles through heat generated
by friction. It was the mint val
ued ns well as the most effective
method known to the aborigines.
The apparatus, In Its simplest
form, consists of a slender piece
or drill and a lower piece or
henrth, near the border of which
the drill is worked by twisting he
tweeu the palms, creating a socket.
From the socket a narrow canal Is
rut In the edge of the henrth, the
function of which Is to collect the
powdered wood ground off by the
friction nf the drill, ns within the
um meal the hent rises to the
Ignition point. This Is the simplest
and most widely diffused tyie of
flre-maklng apparatus known to un
civilized miin. Some of the irllies
also used Hint and pyrites (the
progenitor nf flint and steel),
which Is Btipiiosed to have been in
troduced into America through
Scandinavian contact or from
Europe or Aslu. '
to time, the president and Mrs.
Coolldge spent part ot the morn
ing In the front yard, joking with
their son John, in overalls who
was doing the chores usually per
formed by his grandfather.
After John had raked the yard,
he began unloading a batch of
shingles Into a wheel barrow.
Mrs. Coolldge gave him a lift,
while the president, enjoying the
scene, jokingly gave them Instruc
tions aa to how the work should
be done.
Shortly before noon Colonel
j Coolldge suffered a vomiting spell
land his grandson was sent in one

for Dr. Coupal, who is quartered
In a farm house near the lllnge.
After a tew moments In the sick

on the front porch to converge

then returned to the sick room,
while Mr. and Mrs. Coolldge re
