SALEM, Ore., June 27. Defense
test committees and individual
workers throughout the state are
asked to concentrate energetically
on oral enrollments ot groups of
citizens as one-day Defense Test
Day, July Fourth ,m another bulle
tin of instructions just issued by
the Defense Test committee for
Oregon, through Brigadier-General
George A. While, chairman.
"As the time remaining or en
rollment of one-day volunteers is
so short", says the bulletin, "the
utmost energy by all mayovs' com
mittees, organizations and Indivi
dual workers is essential.
"The immediate response to sug
gestions for the oral enrollment
en masse of groups of citizens is
encouraging. However, inany thou
sands of additional enrollments are
required to make certain that Ore
gon's Defense Test quota of 30,
uuu is attained.
"Committees therefore are, urg
ed to have a speaker at every pub
lic or semi-public meeting to ex
plain the purpose of the Defense
Test, using the form of oath shown
in Bulletin No. 1, previously mail
ed you.'
That proper credit may be given
both to committees and individ
uals for their efforts, and to the
state quota by the War Depart
ment, dady reports of such oral
enrollments .are asked.
The Portland Lodge of Eiks,
with 400 enrolling at one meeting,
and Scout Young Camp No. 2,
United Spanish War Veterans, are
cited for the honor oC being the
first organizations T Tla state to
join the army of Defense Test
volunteers. Among other enroll
ments mentioned is that of seven
Medford pastors, including the
president of the Medford Ministeri
al Association, who took the oath
of enlistment in front of brigade
headquarters of the National Guard
camp Jackson.
The first individual worker to
receive a citation is Second Lieu
tenant Alex M. Hankln, Q. M., Res.,
of Salem, as the first reserve of
f cer to Bend in the quota of 25
signed enrollments, in addition to
oral enrollments, assigned each re
serve officer.
"His energy and enthusiasm in
performance of duty is recommend
ed to all other reserve corps offic
ers", says tho bulletin. "If all
perforin the assignment with the
same zeal, Oregon will go many
thousand over the top."
Notice is given of the removal
of headquarters of the Oregon De
fense Test committee from Camp
Jackson, at Medford, to the Mas
onic building, Salem, to which re
ports should be forwarded after
June 26.
