for Oakland's Fourth of July cele
bration to be held under the aus
pices of the Gobblers Friday and
Saturday next week.
Preparations are being made for
the largest crowd that ever visited !
this city and the program that has
been prepared will leave nothing to
be desired in the way of entertain
ment during the day. From the
opening concert of the Douglas
county band at 9 o'clock in the
morning until midnight closes the
Independence ball there will not be
a dull moment
Following the band concerton j
the street the first thing in the j
morning the parade will begin to
move on its route through the city
and to the celebration grounds I
promptly at 9:30. The parade will'
be led by the Douglas county band
and a large number of decorated-
floats entered by lodges, business
concerns and individuals will be in
line. There will also be a beau
tiful Goddess float with Miss Naomi
I'inkston aa Goddess and a number
of attendants. Miss Dessie Dear-
dorff will appear as Miss Oregon!
in another float and will be at
tended by children representing the
states of the union. Miss Doris
Crandell will be Miss Columbia.
Prizes' of $25, $15 and $10 are of
fered for the best floats.
Appropriate band selections will
begin the program at the celebra
tion grounds. These will be follow
ed by a vocal solo by Mrs. Fred
Strang of Roseburg, with band ac
companiment, and an address of
welcome by Mayor R. D. Bridgea
Judge George M. Brown of the
state supreme court, will deliver
the Independence Day oration
which will be one of the leading
features of the celebration pro
gram. Judge Brown has many
friends and acquaintances In this
section who are looking forward
with pleasure to hearing him on
this occasion.
At 11:30 a short time will be al
lowed for dinner. There will be i
stands on the grounds to provide
refreshments and there will also be
opportunity for those who bring
basket lunches to Bpread them in
picnic style.
The afternoon program will start
with a band concert at the grand
stand at 12:15, Then will come the
ball game and the race events.
Teams from Roseburg and Yoncal
la have been matched for the ball
eame which will be called at 12:30.
It is expected that this will finish 1
in plenty of time to start the j
races at 2:30.
A splendid race card has been ar
ranged by the committee In charge
and the various events and purses
are shown in detail in another col
umn. The premier event will be
the one mile Gobblers handicap for
a purse of $250. Several entries are
assured for this race Including
Joey G., owned by Hobson & Mo
Caslin of Myrtle point, who won
a similar event of July 5 last year.
Thei'fjjwiH be two other events
open to all entries, a half-mile and
a five-eighths, with purses of $150
and $100. There will also be a
hair-mile Douglas county pony race
and a half-mile saddle horse race
also limited to Douglas county en
tries. The other events are a
quarter-mile Shetland pony race,
and a half-mile consolation racf?.
The latter will be open to all
horses that have run during the
meet but have not bepn in on the
niorl iy. The purse for this event
will be $100, which like the
others, will be divided 70 per cent
to the winner, 20 per cent to 'sec
ond place and 10 per cent to third
plane. Entrance fees will be 5 per
cent of the purse of each race.
A number of foot races and
other similar events are being ar
ranged and these will take place
on the track in front of the grand
stand between the horse races. In
the grove there will ne an aero-ride
swing in operation during the day
for the entertainment of the chil
dren. The executive committee has de
cided to adopt the same method
of selling tlrkets as was followed
last year. Tickets will be Rold at
th rntranre to the grounds that
will inrlud not only admission to
the ground but to t h program,
ball gam and rare. Th prir of
th tickets will also be the same,
50c for adults and 25c for children
of grammar srhool age. Grand
stand seats will be 25c but there
will be no charge for cars or for
parking spare. Tickets will be on
sale In a number of places down
town before the parade and a good
deal of delay can be avoided If lo
cal people will secure theirs before
going to the ground.
There will be varied forms of en
tertalnmrnt during the evening,
athletic contests, movies and dance.
